Early life and education

Brown is a native of Chicago, and was born Reginald Dennis Odell II in Maywood, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Like President Obama, Brown was born of a white mother and a black father. When Brown was five, his father left his mother to raise Reggie and her sister Lawrence himself. When Brown was nine, his mother married his stepfather, Lawrence Brown. A year later her stepfather was diagnosed with Leukemia and started a 3-year battle with the disease. At the age of 13, his stepfather died, leaving Brown and his siblings raised by a single mother.
