In 2010, Sia released her fifth studio album We Are Born , which ended at number two on the Australian Album Chart. After the release, Sia took the hiatus from performing and writing songs for other recording artists, including Beyoncà ©  ©, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Flo Rida and David Guetta. In May 2014, Sia announced its sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear and released "Chandelier" as its main single. Sia revealed that he originally wrote a song for Rihanna or Beyoncà ©  ©, but decided to record the song itself. The melody was formed after Sia played the piano, while Greg Kurstin and Jesse Shatkin played marimba in the studio. It is described as an electropop ballad, featuring a "soaring" synthesis, a "militant" drum, and hip hop beats with the influence of electronica, R & amp; B, and reggae. This song features the vocal performance of Sia's "jaw dropping". The lyrics, "Chandelier" have a sad theme talking about "glitter and fatigue of a party girl's life". 'Chandelier' has received critical acclaim. Andrew Trendall from Gigwise wrote that the song "Sia springboards from a genius behind the scenes becomes a superstar in itself". Gordon of Pitchfork Media praised Sia's vocal performance on the track and commented that the track "is enough to make you want to swing from the chandelier". Bradley Stern of the MuuMuse website labeled the best pop singles "Chandelier" of 2014, praised the credit of Sia's songs and his voice on the song. In VH1's article, Emily Exton shares that thought, thinking of her as the best song Sia ever wrote. Writing for Time magazine Jamieson Cox regards "Chandelier" as "a disabling and unforgettable hearing that will make you happy. Sia keeps this one for himself." In an unenthusiastic review, Melinda Newman of HitFix thinks that Sia "can do much better than this".
Billboard listed "Chandelier" as the best song of the year 2014. The song received nominations at the 57th Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Best Recording of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, with her video receiving a nomination for Video Best Music.

In the United States, "Chandelier" debuted at number 75 on the Billboard US Hot 100 chart dated May 31, 2014. It peaked at number eight on the chart, becoming the first ten single singles by Sia to appear on the chart as main artist. The song reached one million units sold in the US in August 2014, and surpassed 2 million sales in January 2015. The song also reached number six on the Canadian Hot 100. "Chandelier" succeeded in Oceania and Europe, peaking in the top five on 20 national charts including: France, and Poland (number one); Australia, Italy and Norway (number two); New Zealand and Slovakia (number three); and Norway and Scotland (number five). The single is certified quadruple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and platinum by NZ Music Record (RMNZ). In the United Kingdom, "Chandelier" charted at number six on the UK Singles Chart. In France, the single is the third best-selling single in 2014, according to Syndicat National de l'ÃÆ'idion Phonographique.
Music video
The music video for "Chandelier" was released on May 6, 2014, featuring 11-year-old dancer, Maddie Ziegler. In the video, Ziegler wears a medium blonde wig that matches the one used by Sia to promote the album. Throughout the video, Ziegler performs an interpretive dance in a quiet and dirty apartment "while spinning, kicking, jumping, crawling, falling, spinning and hiding behind window curtains". An alternative one-take version of the clip was released in June 2014. Sia has seen Ziegler on Dance Moms and asked him to appear on the video via Twitter. The video was directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, shot by cinematographer Sebastian Wintero and choreographer by Ryan Heffington. Ziegler shared his thoughts on choreography with New York magazine:
I love the whole dance. It's so different and weird to me, because I usually do not, you know, be crazy all the time. It was so much fun to do and it was really out of the box and it expanded me a lot, because I am used to the dance competition where you like, "Point your toes!" But this time it's like, you just have to let go and feel it.
Choreography is praised by the media; an editor of The Guardian wrote that Ziegler "danced with impressive flexibility". Nolan Feenay of Time magazine commented that the dance moves in the video could be the best dance of 2014. "Chandelier" received a nomination at the MTV Video Music Awards for the Video of the Year and Best Choreography, and finally won the last. It was also nominated for the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Music Video. The video became viral on YouTube and became the seventh most watched video on the 2014 video sharing website. Since June 2018, this video has been watched more than 1.8 billion times and by that time, YouTube's video was at the 13th most all the time. It has since moved into position 29 on the Most Viewed Videos list on YouTube throughout the Time. Starting January 2015, Billboard rated the video at number 12 on the 20 best list of 2010 (so far). Sia performed "Chandelier" at The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 19, 2014, with Ziegler creating choreography in the music video. Sia also performed the song on Late Night with Seth Meyers on June 9, 2014, with Girls starring Lena Dunham performing a new choreography. In July 2014, Sia performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! , and Ziegler taught host Jimmy Kimmel and his sidekick Guillermo some dance moves from the music video. In July 2014, Sia performed the song on VH1's "SoundClash" show, along with her songs "Elastic Heart" and "Big Girls Cry" from the album. Sia sang the song on Dancing with the Stars, with a duet Ziegler with Allison Holker, and in the 2014 We Can Survive Concert at the Hollywood Bowl. In February 2015, Sia sang a song in a messy apartment for the 2015 Grammy Awards. Ziegler danced in a messy apartment with a Christian Wiig actress. For all of these performances, Sia sang the song with his back to the camera. She performed the song on Saturday Night Live in January 2015, veiled, with a sad-looking mime that brought the lyrics in American sign language.
Cover and parody
In May 2014, Valentine's Party Puddles, "a sad clown with golden voice" did a version with the Postmodern Jukebox that until June 2018 has had over 8 million views on YouTube. He also performed the song on 12-season premiere of America's Got Talent, mesmerizing the judges and getting four votes needed to move on to the next round. In July 2014, Sara Bareilles performed an acoustic version of "Chandelier" during the Little Black Dress tour. Reut Odinak from Seattle Weekly's vocal praised Bareilles on the cover. Likewise, MuchMusic's Evan Desouza writes that "The song sounds almost [unrecognizable] with a stripped acoustic cover.Of course nothing can match the mad sounds of Sia, but Sara does a decent job, the vocals sound amazing." Later that month, contestant Emily West from the ninth season of America's Got Talent brought a song with an orchestra background to advance past the quarter-finals.
The song was featured on Live Lounge BBC Radio 1 on August 5, 2014 by Scottish band Twin Atlantic and again in September 2014 by Irish band The Script; Music and Lyrics praised the harmony of the last three groups. Reigan Derry performed the third live show of the sixth series on The X Factor Australia in August 2014, getting a standing ovation from the judges. In March 2015, English singer and songwriter and X Factor winner of 2012 James Arthur recorded a very famous acoustic version of the song, which he later did for MTV International. Also Andrea Faustini performed the song on The X Factor UK in November 2014. The tenth episode Selfie , "Imperfect Harmony", featuring Karen Gillan singing a karaoke version of the song disguised as a cover by The Wind and The Wave and the sequence imitating the original video. In the episode of "We Built This Glee Club" (the 119th episode overall), in March 2015, Samantha Marie Ware, Becca Tobin, and Laura Dreyfuss performed the song while J.J. Totah performed the Ziegler dance routine and Marshall Williams swung over the chandelier. Keegan Joyce sang the episode of the third season of "Simple Carbohydrates" from the Australian TV series Please i Me Me.
In January 2015, the Swiss singer MÃ © lanie RenÃÆ'Â © did a slower version of the song in the Swiss national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, winning the right to represent his country in Vienna. Belgian representatives in the European contest LoÃÆ'¯c Nottet also released a cover song on YouTube in November 2014, then praised by Sia on Twitter. Months later, he danced the song twice (including one in the final) in France Dancing with the Stars , winning the competition. On June 22, 2015, Punk Goes Pop 6 was re-released with three new songs, one of which is the "Chandelier" cover by PVRIS.
In October 2014, the dance moves on the music video for "Chandelier" parodied in Saturday Night Live by Jim Carrey, Kate McKinnon and Iggy Azalea in a sketch. Other parodies include the parody video Miranda Sing, which has garnered over 9 million views. Derek Hough synced the song while performing a Ziegler routine parody on the eighth episode of Lip Sync Battle. "Chandelier" is played as background music in the episode closing scene "Truth" on the TV show UNREAL . Jordan Smith covered it in his audition for The Voice in September 2015. Trent Harmon covered it in 4 of his best performances for American Idol in March 2016. Also in March, the English close harmony trio The Puppini Sisters covered the inside song mash with Rappers Delight for their 5th studio album The High Life (The Puppini Sisters album). The song was closed by the Pentatonix on May 19, 2016 Bones episode titled "The Strike on Chord". Kim Yewon from Pledis Entertainment's Pledis Entertainment group, Pledis Girlz, sang this song. Also in 2016, Finnish singer Saara Aalto covered the song twice during the 13th series of the English version of The X Factor, first as part of the initial audition and later in the live semi-final. In March 2017, Elha Nympha covered her in the 2nd season premiere of Little Big Shots. American alternative rock bands They Might Be Giants sometimes play a part of this song during their Particle Man song.
