Biography

Longhurst was born in Bedford, the son of Harry Longhurst who founded the firm Longhurst & amp; Skinner, a home furnishing business in Bedford. He was educated at St. Cyprian's School, Eastbourne, close to the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club, where he recorded "staring at them - caddies, not golfers - with the deepest jealousy as I peeked stealthily from the invisible Greece. He was "lured to life" during a family holiday in 1920 at Yelverton in Devon, where he began playing golf on a homemade three-hole field in general. Here Longhurst is driven by local professionals. He was later educated at Bedford School before winning a scholarship to Charterhouse School and in 1928 went to Clare College, Cambridge. He played for the Cambridge University Golf Club from 1928 to 1931 and captained in 1931. He was a German Amateur Champion in 1936 and runner-up in Swiss Amateur in 1928 and French Amateur in 1937, beaten by Jacques LÃ © Â © glise.

After starting work in the family business, he found a post-sales ad space for Hardware Trading Journal . He was attracted by the politics of his owner, Sir Ernest Benn, and has become a member of the Individualist Society, founded by Benn. Longhurst began writing for a monthly golf magazine called Tee Topics and became the attention of the Sunday Times editor who invited him to contribute to the sports page. As such, he became a golf correspondent of the Sunday Times, and maintained that position for 40 years. He is also a regular contributor of Golf Illustrated .

In 1943, Longhurst was elected as Conservative MP for Acton in West London but lost a seat in the 1945 election. During the 1931 election, Longhurst had spoken at a campaign meeting in favor of the Bedford conservative candidate, whom he described as " an intoxicating lead to politics, and once you've been bitten by a bug, it's almost impossible, like in golf, to throw it away. " die".

From the late 1950s to the end of his life, he was a senior golf commentator on BBC Television. Longhurst is featured on US Golf Airs that works for CBS and ABC. CBS golf producer Frank Chirkinian hired Longhurst to work on selected broadcasts starting with Carling Tournament in 1965. He was best remembered by American audiences for his call in the 16th hole of the Masters Tournament including a 40-foot birdie putt Jack Nicklaus who won in 1975. Longhurst's call of putt ("My my... in my whole life, I've never seen a putt like that.") Is a regular feature in Masters broadcasts. She has many lifelong friends including cricket writers and commentators E.W. Swanton, and Alistair Cooke. Cooke refers to his writing as "prose style, which is as easy as falling out of bed."

In 1953, Longhurst acquired Clayton Windmills (Jack and Jill) near Brighton in Sussex. He lived for several years in "Jack", first in the factory itself and then in a modern house next to it built for him in 1963 by architect Peter Farley who also designed Brighton Marina. "Jill" was abandoned but with a grant from the East Sussex County Council, the building was restored and opened for visitors.

In his memoirs, My Life and the Soft Times, (1971), he defended St. Cyprians, the school he visited in 1915, from critics such as Gavin Maxwell, and George Orwell who had attacked him in polemic > Such, Joy . Nevertheless, the mention of Longhurst to eat a bowl of porridge that makes him sick has been described as a 'own goal'.

He died in Cuckfield, Sussex, in 1978, aged 69 years.

Quotes

Playing golf is like learning a foreign language.

They say 'practice makes perfect.' Of course not. For most golfers it only consolidates imperfections.

Golf excellence goes hand in hand with alcohol, as shown by many open and amateur champions.
