khene (span> ; spelled "Can" in English; Lao: ???; Thai: ? , RTGS: Ã, khaen , pronounced Ã, [k ???: n] ; Khmer: ??? - Ken ; Vietnam: khÃÆ'¨n ) is a mouth organ from Lao whose pipes, usually made of bamboo, are connected by small, concave - outgoing reservoirs wood where air is blown. Today it is associated with Laotians Laos and Isan, other similar instruments are from the Bronze Age. In Cambodia, it is used among the Lao ethnic population of Stung Treng province and is used in lakhon ken , the Cambodian dance drama genre featuring khene as the instrument's premiere.

The most interesting characteristic of khene is its free reed, made of brass or silver. It is associated with Western free-reed instruments such as harmonium, concertina, accordion, harmonica, and bandoneon, developed beginning in the 18th century of Chinese sheng, related instruments, specimens that have been brought to St. Petersburg, Russia.

The khene uses a pentatonic scale in one of two modes ( thang sun and thang yao ), each mode has three possible keys. The khaen has five different lai , or modes: Lai Yai (A C D E G), Lai Noi (D F G A C), Lai Soutsanaen (G A C D E), Lai Po Sai (C D F G A), and Lai Soi (D E G A B). Lai Po Sai is considered the oldest of Lai Khaen and Lai Soutsanaen, "Mr Lai Khaen." Khaen can be played as a solo instrument (Dio Khaen), as part of an ensemble (Ponglang), or as a companion for Lao or Isan Folk Opera Singer mor lam.

Annea Lockwood composed music for this instrument.

In Thailand, one of the best khaen soloists is the blind musician Sombat Simla. The instrument also attracted several non-Asian artists, including University of San Diego professor Christopher Adler, who also composed instruments; English musician Clive Bell (English); Vancouver-based composer/player Randy Raine-Reusch (Canada), who plays khair in Aerosmith's (1989), Cranberries' To the Faithful Departed (1996), and Yes's The Ladder (1999); and Jaron Lanier (United States). Since the beginning of the 21st century, California-born khaen player Jonny Olsen has achieved intimacy in Laos and Thailand by appearing on numerous Thai and Lao TV shows and performing live concerts in Thailand and the US Olsen was the first foreigner to win a khan championship in Khon Kaen, Thailand in 2005. Stephen Molyneux (USA) has played khaen on the release of The Arbitrary State (2010), The Stars Are the Light Show (2012), Wing and Circle (2016), and in selecting live performances. Molyneux purchased a khaen in Bangkok in 2010 after developing interest in instruments while traveling in Laos and Thailand.

Tuning

It has seven tones per octave, with intervals similar to that of the A-minor Western-scale diatonic A: B, C, D, E, F, and G. A khaen can be made in a particular key but can not be adjusted after the reed is regulated and pipe cut. If khaen is played along with other instruments the other must listen to khaen.
