K. Pattabhi Jois year
Schultz met K. Pattabhi Jois in 1982 during a yoga workshop hosted by Stan Hafner. Schultz went on to study under K. Pattabhi Jois for the next 7 years in India and the United States.
Bad Man from Ashtanga Yoga
In 1989 Schultz returned to San Francisco and began teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga from his home in Potrero Hill. Schultz believes that all students should gain access to all poses, as opposed to the Mysore Jois style, where only teachers are empowered to give students new poses to practice after the teacher feels the student has reached his previous mastery.. Schultz instead teaches a modified version of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in which each class combines poses of all 3 of the traditional Ashtanga Series with all students welcome to try all the poses. As a result, Jois called Schultz "The Bad Man of Ashtanga Yoga," because Schultz's interest in practicing and teaching Series 2 and 3 has not been approved by Jois.
Grateful Dead
In the mid-1990s Schultz toured with Grateful Dead as the band's private yoga teacher until Jerry Garcia died. While on tour with the Grateful Dead, one of the band members asked Schultz what his yoga name was. Schultz says it has no name, at that point Bob Weir said, "it should be called Rocket Yoga, because it gets you there faster." In an interview in a Deadhead magazine, Lesh praised Ashtanga by having a real effect on the music of this tour and personally giving him a new feeling of centering. Lesh said, "It has opened a whole new world for me." It was Weir who encouraged Schultz to write his first book on yoga, Ashtanga Yoga As Taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. Phil Lesh from Grateful Dead on Schultz's impact on music:
"I think both yoga and the new sound space have a real effect on this tour music."
Mayor of Folsom Street
In 1991 Schultz founded It's Yoga at 848 Folsom Street in San Francisco. At It's Yoga Larry created a promotional package called "90 days for 90 dollars." By the time yoga is mostly done by small groups at home, and Schultz's yoga studio as a health club concept is the first industry. This Yoga on the street Folsom attracts many, including famous celebrities like San Francisco 49ers and Christy Turlington players. Schultz's It's Yoga began to be credited as one of the pioneers of yoga in the region. In 2002, Yoga moved downstairs to a larger room in the same building at 848 Folsom street. Schultz's fame in the South of Market, San Francisco area earned him his second nickname, "Mayor of Folsom Street."
Rocketman
Schultz gained renown in his life to create the Yoga Rocket Yoga series which is currently considered the basis of Power yoga. Yoga Yoga sequences include Rocket I, Rocket II, Rocket III, and Modified Main Series. Schultz claims his strength comes from teaching 9000 yoga classes & amp; doing 63,000 sun greetings. Schultz said of his teaching philosophy:
Nothing is more satisfying to me as a teacher than to see the light generated by the people of Savasana. Often people walk into it. Yoga with worries, stress and fatigue are written all over their faces but when they leave, they show the effects of Ashtanga Yoga: they feel better and look better, lighter, more free, more relaxed and vibrant. This is why for me, teaching Ashtanga Yoga is a kind of self-realization; every time I lead class I, as a teacher, grow and express my own yoga insights. I see people taking practice from different angles and developing, changing and overcoming their limitations, realizing their possibilities.
Next year
In 2009 This San Francisco Yoga was closed when Schultz moved to Sonoma, California to open a retreat center he called Nauliland. In recent years, Schultz and his wife Marie have focused on their global Rocket Yoga teacher training program, which generates over 5000 students in 142 teacher training. Larry started many who later became his own famous teacher, including Duncan Wong, Russell Yamaguchi, John Berlinsky, Tarik Thami, Amber Espelage, Clayton Horton, David Lurey, David Kyle, Rusty Wells, MC Yogi, and Amanda Giacomini.
