Update
In 2013, Karim protested against YouTube's plan to request a Google account for all commentators. As part of this, he updated the description "Me at the zoo" and added two annotations to the video.
On June 4, 2018, Karim posted two polls in his community tab. The first reads "Should I make another video?" With a choice of "Yes" or "No" answers. The second poll states "Should my next video contain:" with choices of answers including: "Comedy", "Action", "Drama", and "Horror".
Reception
The Los Angeles Times explains that "as the first video uploaded to YouTube, it plays an important role in fundamentally changing how people consume media and help usher in a golden era of 60-second video." The Observer describes the quality of its production as "poor". As of May 2018, the video has received over 50 million views and over 530,000 comments. This is quickly becoming the most accepted video on YouTube that describes what YouTube is.
