RWBY ( , "ruby") is an anime-style American web and media franchise created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. The show is set in the fictional world of Remnants, where young people train to become Huntsmen and Huntresses to protect their world from Grimm beings. The name RWBY comes from the four first names of the main characters: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, as well as the associated theme colors Red, White, Black, Yellow. After several promotional trailers, the first episode was screened on the RTAST Teens convention RTX show and then released on their website in July 2013. The next episode was released around the week, first to Rooster Teeth customers, then to YouTube a week later. The series became a viral hit, and the second season, subtitle Volume 2 , was released in July 2014.

During production Volume 3 , on February 1, 2015, Oum died after experiencing a coma caused by an allergic reaction during a medical procedure. This leaves the future of the series uncertain for a short period of time until Rooster Teeth Animation Head Gray Haddock announces that the series will continue, and that Volume 3 will premiere in 2015 as planned. Volume 3 was released on October 24, 2015. Meanwhile, the first two seasons were released to the home media and available on streaming services such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, the latter of which will include the release of the current season in their simulcast. In October 2016, the fourth season was released. The series has also been dubbed in Japan and broadcast by Tokyo MX, in partnership with Warner Bros.. Japan.

Rooster Teeth released a video game called RWBY: Grimm Eclipse , as well as a spin-off series called RWBY Chibi , in 2016. The fifth volume aired on October 14, 2017 and ended on January 20 2018. The teaser shorts Volume 5 for Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long characters have been released, as well as the second season of RWBY Chibi. The third season of RWBY chibi is released after the end of volume 5. Volume 6 is currently being worked on and set to become prime minister in Autumn 2018.

Summary

This story takes place in the Remnant world, which is full of mysterious and evil creatures known as "Grimm Beings". Prior to the series events, mankind waged a live battle against Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust that enabled them to fight against monsters. On this day, Dust is used to improve the ability and power of people. Those who practice to fight with Grimm are known as Huntsmen or Huntresses. The series focuses on four girls, each with its own weapons and unique strength. Together, they formed a team of RWBY at the Beacon Academy in the Vale kingdom, where they were trained to become Huntress with the JNPR team ( , "juniper" ), the SSSN team (span> , "sun"), the CRDL team ( , "cardinal"), the CFVY team ( , "coffee"), and various other student teams.

When much theft of dust was organized by the local criminal head, Roman Torchwick wiped out the royal capital (Beacon's house), the RWBY Team began investigating the theft of their own accord. This leads them into conflict with Torchwick and its partners, Cinder Fall - whose covert motives require stockpiling of volatile commodities. The Fall Plan is to lead the White Fang - a terrorist group looking for equality for the Faunus/human race/animal hybrid - in a terror attack on Vytal Festival, an annual inter-academy competition. In the chaos, Cinder seized power from a deeper conspiracy among academy school principals. Through Volumes 4 and 5, the RWBY teams scattered each headed to the Haven Academy at Mistral, which took them (deliberately and otherwise) into conflict with Cinder, the new and old villain, and their master Salem, the antagonist.

Development

RWBY has been an old concept of Oum for years before it was developed. Toward the end of his work in Rooster Teeth's 10th season Red . Blue , he developed a color code approach for character names and designs as a hook for the series. During production on Red vs. Blue season 10, Oum asks Burnie Burns series makers if they can produce RWBY after the end of the season. Burns, worried for production schedules, told Oum "If you finish Season 10, then you can do whatever you want." Production at RWBY begins as intended, with the first trailer completed within two weeks and premieres after the credits from Red vs. Blue season 10 finals on 5 November 2012.

Oum designs the characters with help from artist Ein Lee, utilizing designs inspired by classic fairy tales. Each character has an associated color, and it is the first letter of the main character color, red, white, black, and yellow, which gives the series name. The character name also has the same letter and its meaning as color (eg "Weiss Schnee" translated to "white snow" in German). The series was originally written by Oum, along with fellow employees Rooster Teeth, Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross. Oum was initially concerned by a story that focused on the female character developed by the male crew primarily, but said they managed to develop the character of women well. Regarding design, OUM wants to "present a two-dimensional view, a shaded toon, but with all the depth and complexity of 3D animation production." Seasons 1 to 3 are powered by Rooster Teeth's internal animation team using Smith Micro Poser software, from assets built on Autodesk Maya. Starting in Season 4, the episode is now being animated in Maya. The music of this series was composed by Jeff Williams, who previously composed the soundtrack for Seasons 8-10 of Red vs. Blue , and featured vocals by Williams's daughter, Casey Lee Williams.

Promotions

A series of four promotional trailers, one for each of the main characters, was released. They are mainly produced by Oum and assistant animator Shane Newville. Each trailer begins by opening one of the four main characters and then displaying a detailed action sequence. The "Red" trailer is shown after the credits for Red vs. Blue's season 10 finals in November 2012. Followed by the "White" trailer in February 2013. The "Black" trailer was unveiled at the East PAX panel at the end of March and was the first to include a voice dialogue. After the premiere of the "Black" trailer, Oum noted with regret that the first two trailers were shorter and had less character development. The "Yellow" trailer is displayed on the A-Kon Rooster Teeth panel on June 1, 2013. Music from the trailer is sold as a digital download at some online retailers.

On July 5, 2013, in the RWBY panel for their RTX 2013 event, Rooster Teeth aired the first episode of RWBY , and will post the episode to their website on July 18th.

Reception

Critical response

The commentator who discussed promotional trailers praised the event's animated style and soundtrack of his music. The trailer encourages enthusiastic anticipation for the inaugural series. When the first episode aired on RTX, it was popular with attendees to the point that the seats were filled in all three playbacks. Amanda Rush, writing for Crunchyroll, took down the anime and Western influences of the series, and praised it as "clever, interesting, beautiful to look at" which says anime fans will enjoy it. The Yakima Herald-Republic calls it "thrilling" and "captivating" and praises its "beautiful" 3D character animation. The Austin Chronicle describes the premiere as making Oum "rock star" from Rooster Teeth. The series is reported to have contributed to a 9% increase in view for the official YouTube channel Rooster Teeth. Richard Eisenbeis praised the series for using clever fairy tale elements, pleasant and fun dialogues, and battle choreography, but was very critical of the short nature of the episodes, stating that, "The biggest drawback in doing micro-series... is that there is a precious little time for good characterization ". He is also critical of the technical issues of animation, saying that the animation is good when the audience can not see the character's legs. He believes that RWBY is "a good first step into the world of possibilities."

Response to marketing as anime

The reaction to Matt Hullum's statement made on August 15, 2014 about RWBY being anime has been mixed. Lindsay Jones said: "Funny enough, we showed our Japanese RWBY cohorts and they started arguing about whether it was anime or not! But seeing the audience's reception was so real, and we never expected that." Movie Pilot Blogs include RWBY as anime topics among "fire wars" that you do not want to follow. Anime News Network writers Paul Jensen and James Beckett wrote: "We do not have an official RWBY review here in ANN, but it's cool to see American production make it into encyclopedia release." Michael Mauer of The Cornell Daily Sun > writes that the issue is still debated among the anime community, while ComicsVerse's Sabrina Pyun writes "This show is known for many things, from its dubious status as anime with its unique 3D animation style." However, the main news article is dated after Hullum's statement and previewed the following season and the franchise has referred to RWBY as an anime of America, including Variety , Collider, iDigitalTimes, Entertainment Weekly , Adweek , and Hollywood Timeout .
