Elemen plot seri

The series features British actor Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former secret service officer from the unnamed US government intelligence organization, often referred to simply as "The Agency" or "The Company", who tries to redeem his past by offering, usually free, his services as a troubleshooter, patron, and investigator. People in need find it through newspaper ads: "There's a problem? Odds to you? Contact Equalizer 212 555 4200." When he started the business in the pilot episode, it was revealed that his nickname "Equalizer" was given to him by another operative under the name "Brahms", played by Jerry Stiller.

Aided by a group of sometimes mysterious contacts, some of whom come from his surveillance days, McCall crosses the streets of New York City, giving justice to corrupt bullies, police and politicians, thugs, mobsters, rapists, racists, murderers , kidnappers, drug dealers, and other "truly worthy" people. His contacts are also vulnerable to human weakness, ranging from egoism to domestic problems.

Many episodes focus on McCall interacting with "Control" (played by Robert Lansing), the unnamed head of Manhattan's secret organization McCall used to work. As a general rule, however, the person who answered the newspaper ad was unremarkable, average, and unknown.

The show has quite a number of famous guest stars, many of whom have become major stars in their years. The eight-year-old Macaulay Culkin appeared in one episode as a kidnap victim. Melissa Joan Hart, nine years old, appears as a young girl protected by McCall from his former father. Christian Slater emerged as a high school student in the episode "Joyride". Kevin Spacey plays a corrupt police officer. Ed O'Neill plays a doctor in the first season episode "The Children's Song". John Goodman plays a single father who was duped by co-worker Joe Morton to take part in the robbery. The star of a movie that is often watched by Goodman Steve Buscemi appears in the same episode, which marks the first time the two have performed together.

Stewart Copeland, who composed the theme song of the show and much of his music, made a cameo as a pickpocket. Vincent D'Onofrio performed twice in the series, portraying a mafia-burning boy in his first appearance, and a mentally challenged man accused of fake killing in the second. Adam Ant plays a villain in an episode that also features J.T. Walsh, David Alan Grier, Lori Petty, and Luis Guzman. Adam Horovitz of Beastie Boys made a rare acting appearance in an episode with Alex Winter. Bradley Whitford emerged as a brutal young thug who terrorized him from a young hitch-hiking couple leading to the unarmed McCall siege and his son who was away on a father-daughter weekend. Melissa Sue Anderson plays McCall's daughter (unnoticed by herself) by an old boyfriend; in real life, Anderson is, and is the wife of the co-creator of the Michael Sloan series. Frank Whaley, Sam Rockwell, and Jerry O'Connell appeared in the same episode with the gang of teenage robbers. Shelby Anderson lends her singing skills as a lounge singer in an episode that also involves her pant, ZhenZhen. The Vitamin C singer appeared in two episodes with her real name, Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick.

List of episodes

The show lasts for four seasons of 22 episodes each. It was originally updated for the fifth season (causing Keith Szarabajka to deny the role in Midnight Caller). But the show was later canceled due to a dispute between CBS and Universal Studios over the murder renewal She Wrote.

In The Story of The Equalizer , created for the DVD box, Executive Producer Coleman Luck also stated that Universal requested scripts for crossover episodes with Magnum, PI despite crew objections because of the tone which is very different from the two performances. Finally the crossover did not happen and the episode was rewritten as "Beyond Control".

Many fans have noted that the Region 1 version has some songs that were originally used replaced. In reality almost 50 percent of all music is independent of the theme, and the judgment by Stewart Copeland has been replaced by a "blanket" due to an outdated music license agreement, and fees to be incurred in the United States for licensing updates. Instead, the Region 2 version contains all the original music intact.

In Region 4, Umbrella Entertainment has released all four seasons on DVD in Australia.
