Critical reception
Wherever I Lay My Head accepts mixed criticism from music critics. At Metacritic, which gives a weighted average rating of 100 reviews from major critics, the album received an average score of 58, based on 35 reviews, showing "mixed or average review". Priya Elan from NME called the album "brilliant" and wrote that "just like Lou Reed with Nico and Serge Gainsbourg with Brigitte Bardot, Sitek easily translates Johansson's appeal to record", while comparing it " "Ronnie Spector's eloquent tone on the highway in the latter days". The Observer ' s Barney Hoskyns commented that Johansson's "empty androgynous timeline alto is nothing special, but that's hardly a problem", praising the album as "bold and charming eccentric choice honor to single author ". The Guardian ' s Dorian Lynskey describes Johansson's voice as "a lithe and lethargic instrument that offers Nico, Kim Deal and Martina Topley-Bird directions" and states, "You may wish there are more than 70 years of Waits shipping period [...] but it's the size of the appealing appeal of this album that makes you want more. "
AllMusic's reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine found Johansson to be "surprisingly deep and fragile as a singer", concluding that the album "is not quite successful, but it is undeniable, either: unlike so many actors who turn out to be singers, there is not the slightest arrogance for the project this and it's hard not to admire his ambition even when it fails. "Mikael Wood of Spin wrote," Beyond the fact that his voice is deep enough for him to confront the Crash Test Dummies, there is nothing particularly exciting about the Scarlett Johansson singing " , adds that "his vowel is buried deep under [...] Dave Sitek's voice of a compacted gospel-room vote." Nevertheless, Wood believes that the album is "[n] or your typical Hollywood vanity project." Chris Willman of Entertainment Weekly commented, "In burying Johansson's vocals so deep in a boring atmosphere, producer David Andrew Sitek [...] means good but ends up with a blur of great Waits songs."
Stephen M. Deusner of Pitchfork Media considers this album a "Brooklyn update on 4AD vintage bands like This Mortal Coil or Cocteau Twins", but notes that "the only thing we learned about him is that he really , really likes Tom Waits. That's more than enough to avoid doom, but not enough to make Anywhere I Lay My Head much more than just curio. " Rolling Stone < span> ' Will Hermes criticized that "Johansson's voice was unremarkable and his voice sometimes wobbly", dubbed him "a vague gothic Marilyn Monroe lost in a sonic fog". Dave Hughes of Slant Magazine states that Johansson is "not a very interesting or highly skilled singer, and he spends a lot of locked notes into the sub-Nico hum which is quite a bit less charismatic than his rasping line readings might suggest." Alex Denney of Drowned in Sound concludes, "The opposite of a thorough musical improvement of the tape may be respect for the source material that proves Anywhere... ' s fail; all his unquestioned achievements, there is a protracted suspicion that this is too safe, too honorable, a record to do justice for an artist who survives half-dead from a bar stool in popular consciousness.
