Google Chrome app is a web app that runs on the Google Chrome web browser. Chrome apps can be obtained from the Chrome Web Store where apps, extensions and themes can be installed or purchased. There are two types of apps, hosted and packaged, that have locations that are different from those that can be executed and targeted on various use cases.
On August 19, 2016, Google announced that it would start deleting Chrome Apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux (both packaged and hosted) by the end of 2016, completing the process in early 2018. However, the company said it would continue continue to be supported and maintained on Chrome OS "for the foreseeable future".

Application type
Chrome apps can be hosted or packaged. Hosted apps have their background web pages on the remote server and the app acts like a bookmark or shortcut; packaged applications have off-line functions utilizing local storage.
Packaged app
The packaged app launches on September 5, 2013. They have features that are very similar to native desktop apps, which are offline (by default), able to interact with hardware, and can access local storage. Packaged apps are not limited to the traditional Chrome interface and can be displayed without the classic windows menu and operating system user interface elements swapping and turning.
Hosted apps
Hosted apps are genuine Chrome app types. They contain a single manifest file containing URLs and additional information about the app. Hosted apps are usually offline and are subject to ordinary web page security restrictions.
