Controversy Highlights

On Monday, February 22, 2016 Raina was forced to take off his turban at the airport in San Francisco an hour before boarding a plane to Toronto. Raina, who has a Sikh background, wears a turban for religious reasons. After being told to take off his turban or book another flight, Raina says, removing his turban in a private room.

After completing a security check, Raina asks if the security guard can give him a mirror so he can reapply his turban in private. But the TSA agent refused, suggesting he walk across the terminal to the public toilet - his head is still undiscovered - and use the mirror there. Raina noted the experience was a shameful and sensitive trial, and that simple improvements, such as adding a mirror to a personal screening area or giving it a hand-held mirror, would be more appreciative.

The incident caused a reaction on Twitter and gathered international news on Cosmopolitan India, Seventeen , New York Daily News , and BBC Asia. While a TSA spokesman made a statement explaining the screening process for religious attire, they did not apologize directly for the incident with Raina. After the incident, Raina felt her frustration over social media issues, which sparked media outrage over TSA's racial profile in general.
