The long-held view is that rabbits will behave strangely and vibrantly throughout their breeding season, which in Europe is March (but that actually extends for several months after March). This strange behavior includes boxing in other rabbits, jumping vertically as there seems to be no excuse and generally displaying abnormal behavior. The earliest verbal records of this strange animal behavior occurred in about 1500, in the poem of Blowbol's Test where the original poet said:
- Thanne ÃÆ'þey begyn to spin and stare, And be like a braynles as Marshe rabbit
- (Then they start turning and staring, And just as stupid as the March rabbit)
Similar phrases were evidenced in the sixteenth century in the works of John Skelton ( Replycacion , 1528: "Aiii, I say, you are a Marche Hare"; Magnyfycence , 1529: "As graceful as marche hare"). The use of the phrase was later recorded in the writings of Sir Thomas More ( The souls supplycacyon created by syr Thomas. More councellour for our lorde's kynge and chauncellour of hys Duchy of Lancaster. >: "Not crazy like a rabbit in March, but as a crazy dog."
Although the phrase has generally been used continuously since the 16th century, it was popularized in more recent times by Lewis Carroll in his 1865 children The Adventure of Alice in the Wonderland where March Hare is a memorable character.
