Backgrounds and announcements

In 2013, the inaugural YTMA experienced varying acceptance to negative due to technical difficulties, as well as having the majority of the award winners come from mainstream music, not YouTube itself. In addition, the director and host of the awards show, was not allowed to practice before filming ceremonies at a New York City warehouse at Pier 36. In 2014, no award ceremony was held. By the end of the year, YouTube announced there will be an award ceremony held in March 2015. On March 12, 2015, YouTube released an official video announcing that the event will be held on March 23rd.

However, YouTube changed the purpose of the award, as they shifted from the homage, "artists and songs that YouTube fans have transformed into a global hit over the past year," for, "recognize the greatest artist and appear to watch on YouTube in 2015." In addition, ceremonial arrangements were announced to no longer be presented in the form of live performances. Conversely, for a single day in March 2015, the website will highlight the music video as, "music will be the main title on YouTube." Despite differences in the presentation format and the purpose of the award being announced, Kia Motors and VICE Media retained their status as sponsors of YTMA.
