The term interactive video typically refers to a technique used to integrate interactions and linear or video films.

Interactive video on broadband
Since 2005, interactive video has been increasing online as a result of a number of factors including:
- increased number of users accessing the internet at broadband speed
- adding video as media type to Flash
Because users are often reluctant to pay for online content, it may not be surprising that many new online interactive videos (including all the examples given below) are sponsored content or part of an ad campaign. A number of these sections have won great accolades.
Some of the main forms of online interactive videos that have appeared are listed below.

Click-through video
A number of interactive video technologies have been developed in recent years that utilize a new way of encoding videos that allows users to add clickable hotspots to video.
There is also a technology that enables video producers to include questions, calculations, results, lead generation, and personality judgments directly into the video experience. Interactivity used to require postproduction is now available to any video creator for existing video content.

V-Commerce
In April 2012, the Canadian fashion retailer ssense.com partnered with an interactive video technology company, WIREWAX, to release an interactive music video, featuring Iggy Azalea, Diplo and FKi, originally initiated as a marriage of art and commerce. All styles displayed in the video can be purchased by clicking on a star that wears it any time the viewer sees the 'S' tag. The video was covered in fashion blog and in print.

"Customizable online interactive video"
Customizable videos allow users to customize multiple variables and then play videos tailored to user-specific preferences. But the user actually does not interact with the video while it is playing. Recent examples of this video form include:
- Miss Helga - a customizable video ad for Volkswagen Golf made by Crispin Porter Bogusky and The Barbarian Group
- Ave a Word - a customizable video ad for Mini created by Glue London - Silver Cannes Lion 2006.
- Electric Feel - an adjustable music video for a song sung by the MGMT band.

Online video interactive "conversation"
Conversational videos allow users to interact with the video in turns, almost as if the user was having a simple conversation with the characters in the video. Recent examples include:
- Subservient Chicken - "Conversational" interactive video ad for Burger King by Crispin Porter Bogusky and The Barbarian Group, Cannes Grand Prix 2005.
- Conversation with Sir Ian - Interview with Sir Ian McKellen's interactive video about Shakespeare. Created for the National Theater by Martin Percy. BAFTA nominee 2007.
- Conversation with Shimon Peres, President of Israel, the video was created by Interactive "interactive agent.
- Interactive interview with John Hamm before he hosted the 2013 ESPY Awards.
Online interactive video "explorative"
Video exploration allows users to move space or view objects such as artwork from different angles, almost as if the user is seeing objects in real life. The object or space is depicted using a video loop, not fixed, creating a more "live" feel. Recent examples include:
- BT Series - Interactive video exploration by Tracey Emin, Anthony Gormley and Rachel Whiteread. Made for Tate's Gallery by Martin Percy. Webby Nominee 2006 and Honoree 2007.
- Tate Tracks - Exploring various interactive video works, enabling users to listen to music while viewing the art. Made for Tate's Gallery by Martin Percy. Part of an integrated campaign that won the Cannes Gold Lion 2007.
In addition to online use, interactive video can be found in a variety of applications, as listed below.

In-game interactive video game
The terms interactive video or interactive films sometimes refer to techniques that are not currently commonly used to create computer games or interactive narration. Instead of 3D computer graphics, an interactive image stream is created using a premade video clip, often produced by coating computer-generated material with a 12-inch videodisc image (where tuning is known as "level III" interactive video, to distinguish it from "level" I " or just videodisc, and "level II" requiring special videodisc players that support interference-based interactivity without using external computer settings.) The clips can be animated as in Dragon's Lair video games or live action videos such as in Night Trap video games Compared to other computer graphics techniques, interactive videos tend to emphasize the look and movement of interactive characters, not interactivity.

Interactive video in theaters
Interactive video has been used in interactive cinema presentations.

Interactive video on YouTube
In 2008, YouTube added Video Annotations as an interactive layer of speech bubbles, text boxes and clickable lights. Users can add interactive annotations to their videos and with it new trends of interactive videos appear, including selecting your own adventure video series, online video games using YouTube videos, place-the-difference-game videos, dubbing animals and more. In 2009, YouTube added a community aspect to the Video Annotations feature by allowing video owners to invite their friends and communities to add annotations to their movies.
Around 2010 YouTube released an interactive takeover, certain channels have the opportunity to integrate the iFrame experience that allows them to include interactive videos. Some of the most successful takeovers are made by brands like Samsung, Tipp-Ex or Chrome.

Interactive videos in ads
In 2014, Innovid video marketing platform was awarded a US patent for interactive video technology In 2017, Adways interactive video agency created a special format called InContent that made it possible to add interactive ads to live streaming for Roland-Garros.

Interactive video art
Contemporary interactive video artists such as Miroslaw Rogala, Greyworld, Raymond Salvatore Harmon, Lee Wells, Camille Utterback, Scott Snibbe and Alex Horn have expanded the interactive video form through dialogue and participatory engagement of active and passive viewers. The enduring art machine is a video art portal and an interactive video installation that integrates over 1000 international video artists into one large interactive video experience.

Interactive video in mobile phone game
A number of interactive video game phones have been developed over the past few years.

Interactive video in VJing
Technically VJing is also about making the video stream interactively. But it rarely involves interaction between the end user and the video stream.

Interactive video in research
The human-computer interaction research community (HCI) as well as the multimedia research community has published several works on video interaction tools. Surveys are provided at
