Step box is a basic dance step named after a pattern created on the floor, box or box. It is used in a number of American ballroom dances: rumba, waltz, foxtrot bronze levels. Although it can be done individually, it is usually done with a partner. This is the most common dance step in waltz. In international standard dance competitions, there is a similar step called closed change.
In a typical example, the leader begins with the left foot and continues as follows.
- First box: forward-side
- Second half box: back side-together
Each step with full weight transfer. During the second and fifth steps the leg should travel along two sides of the box, not along the diagonal.
Rhythm varies. For example, "1-2-3, 4-5-6" in waltz and "Sqq, Sqq" in rumba.
In other dances (and in variations) the box can start from the left or right foot, either back or front, or even sideways. For example, in Spanish quadrado the samba de Gafieira step leader (starting with left foot) "left-together-back, right-together-forward".
