Figwit is a name that fans created for unnamed Elf escorts in Peter Jackson's movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings, played by actor and musician Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords fame. The name Figwit comes from an acronym for " F rodo i s g rea... w ho i s T HAT?!? "[ sic ]. The characters will later be identified in the movie version of The Hobbit, such as Lindir , elves from Rivendell appearing briefly on J.R.R. Novel Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring .

Bret McKenzie, half of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords and native of Wellington, first got a minor role in addition to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. He is seen sitting next to Aragorn during the council in the Rivendell scene. When it was decided that the Ring should be destroyed, Frodo offered to take the Ring to Mordor, and Elrond declared the formation of the Ring Fellowship. The fairy was nicknamed "Figwit" by fan Tolkien Iris Hadad; Upon seeing Frodo agree to take the ring, saying "I will take it", the film turns to a shot where Figwit can be seen standing on the far right, and Hadad's initial reaction is "Frodo is... who is it?!?" Then, Hadad corresponded with his colleague Sherry de Andres, and both created the first Figwit fan website, www.figwitlives.net, calling him "Legolas for a thinking woman".

McKenzie appeared as Figwit again in the third film, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, where she is credited as "Elf Escort". He appears in a scene where Arwen leaves for Gray Havens and has a vision of his son's future, Eldarion, this time with two lines of warning to him not to delay and then exclaim as he turns around. Director Peter Jackson stated in the DVD commentary for the Return of the King that Figwit was recalled and given a dialogue in the third movie "just for fun for the fans" because "so much commotion has been made about him over the last few years ".

Popularity

Although he only appeared about three seconds in the first film, Figwit's popularity soon flourished, with Hadad claiming that "[fan sites] got lots of e-mails from people who thought they were the only ones who had noticed that handsome, dark- haired elves ". Figwit's appearance and physical attitudes are the source of much of his popularity: he has been noted for "graceful and graceful movements", "enigmatic madness", "haughty behavior", and "pouty" appearance. His fan website proclaims it "in one word, beautiful, or else, amazing... hypnotic... amazing... charming... choose."

McKenzie has stated that Figwit's obsession is "weird," even though he's "flattered." He said that "it's so funny because it has been pushed by so little... I'm famous for not doing anything."

In other media

Figwit does not appear in Tolkien's writings and was specially created for films; so there's little authentic information about him, except that he's a companion. The only "official" place where Figwit's name is used is on some of the Topps trading cards, including the King Return Card series, titled "Back to Rivendell," and Authentic Autographs cards featuring Bret McKenzie. In The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game he was named Aegnor , one of Galadriel's sisters at The Silmarillion. A Figwit action figure is also created, although it is named "Elven Escort," as in the movie.

Figwit has been the subject of poetry, art, and fiction. He is also a subject in the fan slash fiction, where he is named " Melpomaen ", a rough and literal translation of the "fig" and "wit," comes from melpo Quenya said for the fruits (images), and play, said Noldorin for smart or skilled.

Documentary

In 2004, a 57-minute documentary about the Figwit phenomenon was created by McKenzie's fiancee (and now wife) Hannah Clarke and friends Stan Alley and Nick Booth. Entitled Frodo Outstanding... Who Is That? !! , was aired at the Auckland International Film Festival on July 23rd. What is meant by "[describing] Bret's identity," follows McKenzie to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he meets his distinctive pout fans and "exquisite good looks," and features an extensive interview with fans behind various Figwit fan sites as well as with Peter Jackson, Barrie Osborne, Mark Ordesky, Ian McKellen, and other cast members. Booth stated that their movie was "far less polite and bizarre" compared to the behind-the-scenes documentary of the movie trilogy, which was "very pushed around production and the players and Tolkien".
