Plot

Alma Duval is a Louisiana housewife who plans a 45th birthday celebration for her husband, John Henry, known as Jack, who brings a much younger woman behind her back.

During his birthday dinner, Jack takes the argument with his eldest son, Buddy, challenging him to show him some spine. After dinner is over, he takes teenage son, Billy, out to play pool and drink beer, trying to demonstrate to him how a man should behave. Jack confesses in Billy that he is not satisfied with his life.

No one touched Alma's birthday cake. Later in the evening, he shares some with his neighbor, Fan while Fan tries to convince him to smoke and drink casually to impress Jack.

While his father was arguing with Ruby, the 19-year-old mistress, Virginia Duval became his first lover with Wyatt's girlfriend, a medical student, who later said he could not marry her because he had to be with someone with a bigger position and wealth..

Alma has held the belief that if she can move the family back to her hometown, where she and Jack start, everything will be fine. But he slaps Jack after finding his affair. He decided to leave her and move to Florida, but she and Ruby were immediately killed in a car accident. Alma and her children finally return to her hometown, to bury Jack, but she realizes that the people and places there have changed too much, no real happiness can be found there. The family went home, with Alma insisting that the future for all of them would be successful and enjoyable.
