Van Dyke wrote this poem in 1907 while living at the home of Williams College president Harry Augustus Garfield. He served as a guest preacher at Williams at the time. He told his host that the local Berkshire Mountains had been his inspiration.

The lyrics were first published in 1911 in the Van Dyke Book of Poems, Third Edition.

Van Dyke wrote of this hymn:

These verses are a simple expression of the Christian feelings and desires of today-today's hymns that may be sung together by those who know the thinking of the times, and are not afraid that the truth of any science will destroy religion, or the revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust, joy, and hope.

"This hymn is generally regarded by hymn experts to be one of the lyrics of hymn singing in English."

Original text

Joyful, joyful, we admire You - God of glory, Lord of love
The heart was revealed like flow'rs before Thee Op'ning to Sun above
Embrace the cloud of sin and sadness drove the darkness of doubt
Everlasting happiness fill us with day light

All thy work with joy around thee The earth and the sky reflect your rays Stars and angels sing around you unbroken praise center
Fields and forests, valleys and mountains Flow'ry grassland, the sea blinks bird song and fountain flowing call us to rejoice in Thee

You give and forgive ever blessed, never been honeymooners spring life joy
the depth of the ocean a happy rest
You are the Father, Christ, our brother--
all who live in love are yours Teach us how to love each other
Take us to Joy Divine

Mortals join the mighty chorus
where the morning stars start
Father-love rules us - brother-love binds man to man.
Ever sang, we marched onward winner in the middle of the
dispute pleasant music lifts us toward the sun in the victory song of life
