Joseph H. Pereira , popularly known as the Singing Priest , is a Roman Catholic priest, a social worker and founder and guardian of the Kripa Foundation , a a Mumbai-based non-governmental organization that works for the rehabilitation of HIV patients and people affected by substance abuse. He has been linked with Mother Teresa and B. K. S. Iyengar and is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences. A student of B. K. S. Iyengar and a supporter of Iyengar Yoga, he is a certified instructor of a yoga school. The Indian government awarded it the fourth highest civilian award from Padma Shri, in 2009, for its contribution to society.

Biography
Joseph Pereira was born in a Luso-Indian Roman Catholic family in the suburbs of Mumbai, in the state of Maharashtra in western India and conducted his early school where he had the opportunity to study Sanskrit. He began studying yoga from the age of eleven, and choosing a priest's call, he enrolled himself in the seminary where he was involved with the choir groups there. He continued his academic studies to earn a Master of Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Mumbai and certification in the theory and practice of counseling from Hazelden Institute of the Hazelden Foundation, USA. While in seminary, he got a chance to meet BKS Iyengar, a famous yoga teacher and founder of Iyengar Yoga, and joined him as a yoga student in 1968. In 1971, he began participating in Mother Teresa's activities and a decade later, she founded > Kripa Foundation in 1981, with several inmates, at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Bandra where she serves as a parish priest. The foundation, which has a humble beginning, grew over the years, currently operating from 69 centers in India and also has presence in Canada, Germany and the United States. The organization works for the rehabilitation of HIV/AIDS patients and victims of substance abuse and alcoholism and is affiliated with the Ministry of Justice and Social Empowerment. The center uses yoga as a means to treat alcoholics and drug addicts.
Pereira teaches yoga philosophy in various Indian institutions including Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is the national coordinator of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) and is the guardian of the Indian chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He acted as consultant to the Bombay Archdiocese in matters relating to drug addiction and held regular workshops on de-addiction and yoga in India and abroad, where he has issued several audio/video CDs such as Wholeness and Holiness. , Yoga for Christian Meditation Practices , and Whole People in Prayer . His students included Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first Prime Minister. He is the author of Yoga for Christian Meditation Exercises , a guide for yoga beginners. The Indian government awarded him civil honor Padma Shri in 2009.
