Music distribution
MacLeod decided to release its music under a Creative Commons license to maximize the number of people who can listen and use their music. According to him, part of the reason for allowing people to use his music for free is his belief that the current copyright system is broken; he felt powerless to change his entire system, but hoped to create "an alternative work body that could compete with them".
MacLeod's most popular license is CC BY; as long as he receives credit, his music is free to use. No-attribution licenses are also available for people who are unwilling or unable to credit MacLeod; this license costs $ 30 for one song, $ 50 for two songs, and $ 20 per song for three or more songs.
MacLeod has also created FreePD.com, which collects new public domain sound recordings by various artists. Instead of waiting for old copyrights to expire, he hopes to provide quality libraries of modern recording work by artists who explicitly release their music into the public domain. Some MacLeod music itself is available on the website as well; he explained that these songs "are not commercially viable in the traditional sense, and only add to the chaos [on the main website] that prevents people from finding the pieces they might want."
