Mary Ann Murphy (born c 1958) is an American ballroom dance champion, an accredited dance judge, and a judge and choreographer on a reality show-a Fox dance competition So You Think You Can Dance .

Mary Murphy was born in Lancaster, Ohio to an Irish family. He graduated from Northwest High School in Canal Fulton, Ohio.

Careers

After graduating from Ohio University with a degree in physical and minor education in modern dance, Murphy moved to Washington, D.C. to start his career. He answered the newspaper ad for the instructor of the studio instructor. She became an instructor after just one week, and the studio owner invited her to attend the US Ballroom Championship in New York City, which was an event that influenced her to commit to a career in ballroom dancing.

Murphy moved to California and sought out a dance partner while working as an instructor. During the British Open Championships in England, he met with Manfred Stiglitz and a dancing partnership formed. The two began to compete and eventually became the Austrian National Champion 1990 and 1991. Despite their success, constant travel and domestic commitments Murphy took their toll. Murphy had opened the Champion Ballroom Academy in San Diego in 1990 and found it difficult to separate himself between these two obligations.

Over the next five years he went on to build a list of achievements with California-based partners, earning degrees in Southwest Dance Tournament, Star Saint Louis Ball, and International Grand Ball. Together with Bill Milner's partner, Murphy made the final of the US Open Standards in an unprecedented six months. Finally, in 1996, he and his partner Jim Desmond made the American Open America Open Smooth and won the US Open American Nine Dance. He retired from the competition and shifted his focus to his dance academy.

She acted as a double dance for Julia Roberts in the movie Something to Talk About and appeared on Dance With Me , starring Vanessa L. Williams.

She appeared in the 2010 movie "Degrassi Takes Manhattan" as a worker in a casino wedding chapel.

He currently runs a dance studio and organizes a Los Angeles dance competition, the Dancesport Hollywood Championship. He is often a judge in several competitions, including the US National Ballroom Championship.

So You Think You Can Dance

Murphy is part of the guest judge and choreographer pool when season 1 begins in 2005. In 2006, for season 2, he made an improved appearance on the judging table. In 2007, before season 3, Murphy was announced as a permanent judge, a position previously owned by Nigel Lythgoe.

In 2008, Murphy made guest appearances in the international version So You Think You Can Dance, including So You Think You Can Dance Australia So You Think You Can Dance Canada and So You Think You Can Dance Scandinavia .

In 2008, Murphy imitated his role as judge in the fourth season with his regular fellow, Nigel Lythgoe, and at the end of the season, made a surprise samba with Dmitry Chaplin. Murphy continues as a weekly permanent judge on season 5 and season 6.

For season 7, it was announced that Mia Michaels would replace Murphy as a permanent judge. Despite being absent most of the season, Murphy appears with a seat at the judging table for Vegas Week as well as the final episode. In 2011, he again replaced Mia Michaels as a permanent judge for season 8.

Personal life

Murphy has been married three times and reveals that during her first marriage, which lasted nine years, she became a victim of domestic violence. In October 2010, at Larry King Live he said he finally spoke so that other victims could learn how he survived, but escaped, domestic violence. Her first husband denied torturing her physically or mentally.

In 2008, Murphy divorced peacefully with her third husband, Phillip Gott, who remains an employee of her ballroom dance academy. On May 28, 2011, Murphy announced that he was making amends with his second husband in his final days against cancer. On July 22, 2011, Murphy stated in his online blog. "When we say goodbye to the contestants, I also bid farewell to my ex-husband today, because cancer has taken other special people out of my life.Although our marriage does not work, we become good friends.I will miss it and I will always love him. "

In 2011, during the announcement of the return of Murphy as a permanent judge for season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance, it was revealed that he had undergone treatment for thyroid cancer. Although it is possible that he will never be able to speak again, he is now cancer-free with the intact vocal cords.
