True Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship and Life Together is a 2012 wedding book written by Christian writer Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace, and published by Thomas Nelson. The book spends one week on Best Seller's New York Times list for advice books, however, controversy arose when it was later reported that former Mars Hill Church pastor had contracted with a Source Product marketing company to influence metrics on the best seller list shortly before resigning. The Church also created a series of True Marriage sermons based on the book.

Content

In the foreword, Mark and Grace Driscoll stated that they developed the book after they counseled many couples - many of whom faced challenges about how to apply the Bible to their marriage. According to the authors, many couples they counsel fear to ask questions, and the book seeks to answer those questions. This book holds to the supplementary view of marriage between a man and a woman. The book is divided into three parts: Marriage, Sex, and Last Day. In the first part, Driscolls shares their personal stories, including their personal care, their years as a date, and conflicts in their marriage. In the second part, the author discusses three different views about sex - sex as a god, sex as dirty, and sex as a gift. In the third section, the author explains how to "reverse engineer" a person's marriage, by examining how to "get it right" on her last day.

Real Marriage Series

The book was later converted into a sermon series, featuring Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace, with questions and answers at the end of each sermon. Parallel to the contents of the book, this series is divided into:

  • "The Same New Marriage Couple"
  • "Friends with Benefits" Driscoll quotes the story of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora to discuss friendships in the context of marriage.
  • "Men and Marriage" Driscoll quotes Genesis, stating that when Eve sinned, God called Adam, not Eve. Driscoll states that men are responsible for their wives and families.
  • "The Respectful Wife" Driscoll states that this chapter was written by his wife, Grace, and that he "just delivered a letter." Driscoll refers to the book of Ephesians which states that a "respectful wife" consists of praying for her husband, "honoring him so as to make him honorable," but not allowing him with silent obedience.
  • "Removing Trash"
  • "Gender: God, Dirty, or Gift?"
  • "Disgrace and Grace"
  • "The Porn Path" Mark and Grace Driscoll invite former employees of the porn industry to discuss his life and experience of the work.
  • "Lovers and True Lovers"
  • "Can We ________"
  • "Reverse your Life and Wedding Techniques"

Reception

Critical acceptance for this book has been mixed, with Weekly Publishers praising the "very refreshing approach" of the book. Relevant writes that "Though of course not everything is bad, the helpful and the dangerous in the Real Marriage are too entwined to thoroughly help."

Criticism

This book has faced criticism due to the detailed and frank sex discussion about sex in Real Marriage. The Driscolls have stated that they do not write books for people who want to read books for "voyeuristic" purposes, but because they view sex as an important part of marriage and that most marriage help books are written for people who have not "experienced sexual harassment or have been abused or exposed to pornography or sexual sin ". The book has also been criticized for content such as the chapter entitled "Respectful Wives", with critics claiming that the book was "an extraordinary job unreasonable to women" and that "this book focuses so much on sex that it can create the impression that it is the most important element of marriage ".

Mark Driscoll has responded to these criticisms, stating that he is aware that the contents of the book will "capture the criticism" and that "accommodating everyone is impossible".

New York Times Bestseller Controversy

In March 2014, The Los Angeles Times reported that the Mars Hill Church was contracted with Source of Results "to perform the best-selling campaign for your book, 'Real Marriage' on the week of January 2, 2012. The best-selling campaign is meant to put 'Marriage Real 'in the New York Times bestseller list for a list of Suggestions. "To achieve this, the contract states that" RSI will buy at least 11,000 total orders within a week. " This happened and as a result, the book was ranked # 1 on the hardcover suggestion bestseller list on January 22, 2012.

On March 28, 2015, a former church elder revealed that Mark Driscoll was not involved in initiating or signing a contract with the marketing company Source of Results. Elder stated that the business relationship with the Source of Results was initiated by a minister who resigned shortly afterwards, and the remaining church leaders disagreed over the completion of the contract stating that it would have a bad effect on the church and Mark Driscoll.
