Mortal Kombat: Legacy is an American series web anthology adapted from the fictional world of the video game franchise Mortal Kombat . It debuted on the YouTube channel Machinima.com on April 11, 2011. The second season was released as a whole on September 26, 2013.

The premise of this show comes from short film director Kevin Tancharoen titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth , which describes the original game's story background in a realistic way. Looking for a green light from the studio for production on the re-imagined Mortal Kombat movie, he submitted the concept to Warner Bros. Pictures after presenting it to Midway Games (Warner purchased Mortal Kombat and other assets from the original owners of the property in 2009) and New Line Cinema (original Mortal Kombat movie rights holder became the division/label of the larger studio in 2008), who refused to support the film, despite the attention and positive fan reception. Instead Tancharoen got the go-ahead for filming the web series.

The first season Mortal Kombat: Legacy is a prequel for the original game, explaining the story background of some characters from the series and demonstrating their reasons for participating in the upcoming tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, where the first game is based. Non-linear episodes with minimal continuity and each is devoted to a particular character or character story. The second season includes the tournament itself.

Production

Conception

On June 8, 2010, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth appeared on YouTube amid confusion about its origins and intentions. Kevin Tancharoen says he has been thinking about rebooting Mortal Kombat for some time, and when the technology becomes available to him, he feels the time is right to make a short film. Tancharoen wrote and directed the film over the weekend without studio involvement. With the help of friends and colleagues and a $ 7,500 budget, the film finished in two months. Prior to submitting the film to Warner Bros., Tancharoen intends to personally upload it to YouTube briefly to gauge a colleague's response. He deliberately made it available to the general public, who quickly voiced a very positive response.

While a public release might be a mistake, Tancharoen is glad it happened as he did. He sees a positive response coming from fans and realizes the power of social networking in helping small directors gain followers for movie studio executives. Armed with favorable fan recipients, Tancharoen meets Warner Bros. executive, who quits green-lighting a big movie, but agrees to fund the web series based on the Mortal Kombat franchise. The final step is to convince Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise and executive producer at NetherRealm Studios, who just created the latest video games game, to approve this series. Boon was impressed with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth , but it was not fully sold in the vision Tancharoen imagined. After he met Tancharoen, Boon was surprised by his enthusiasm for the franchise and quickly offered his support.

Development

Season 1

Mortal Kombat: Legacy is produced by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Warner Premiere. Tancharoen, Lance Sloane and Tim Carter serve as producers. It consists of nine episodes of 8-12 minutes, each written by Tancharoen and Spartacus: Blood and Sand writers Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing, with Tancharoen directing. Larnell Stovall, who works with Tancharoen at Rebirth , is the action coordinator. The series was filmed in Vancouver in February and March, with Tancharoen tweeling daily updates of their progress. Post production begins in March and resumes with the release. Visual effects are handled by the Goldtooth Creative Agency.

When Tancharoen created Mortal Kombat: Rebirth in 2010, he took on the traditional Mortal Kombat story, which for 20 years was based in a supernatural world, and recounted it based on a real-world scenario. The basic character and plot of a tournament persists, but most of the mystical elements such as alternative nature, magic, and character backstories like Baraka and Reptile are tailored to fit the new realistic universe. This new take on the franchise is what prompted Ed Boon to comment that Rebirth "may cross the line" in terms of re-imagining. Warner Bros. received a new style. Despite the changes, Tancharoen promised fans of the web series would apply to franchising, including the mystical and supernatural elements famous for Mortal Kombat . Small budgets force some stories to set in a realistic world to avoid the high costs of creating a fantasy world with visual effects. From Boon's involvement, Tancharoen said he was instrumental in this event following the canon of the series, but that he let Tancharoen incorporate his own ideas.

The first two episodes are largely based on a truly living universe. The following three episodes fit in, but ends with the first clue of a supernatural theme when Shang Tsung seems to freeze time to converse with Johnny Cage. Episodes 4 and 5 reveal the most in the Tancharoen style approach problem to real-world/mysticism debate. Baraka is depicted right into the original backstory of the video game, and ideas like magic and many fields are perfected. Criticism has been made on the production team for ignoring the real-world approach of for Inheritance , although Tancharoen constantly declares that the supernatural element of Mortal Kombat will be included in the series. Tancharoen says that some stories can be told in his realistic Rebirth approach, but other stories are too based on the supernatural to be transformed into real-world imagery. The launch of Episode 6 includes notes from Tancharoen itself, written for fans before the episode begins: "The following episode represents my different view on the Mortal Kombat realm.I think it combines a perfect amount of sandy realism mixed with a bit of mysticism I hope you enjoy it. "

Development of season 2

On July 15, 2012, IGN revealed an exclusive video created by Tancharoen directed at fans announcing Season 2, adding that all the scripts are complete. The director also confirmed more fight scenes and improved special effects in the upcoming season to focus on the actual Mortal Kombat tournament of the original game, in response to fans who were let down by first season settings. On December 3, 2012, it was announced that the second season of the series has started production in Los Angeles, with its first worldwide debut recording in a trailer on February 17, 2013 at the Streamy Awards. Within 24 hours, the trailer has been seen over 2 million times. Tancharoen also stated that Season 2 will not affect its development of feature films. On March 31, 2013, a TV spot aired during AMC's for the series - the first time a YouTube channel had purchased advertising space on television.

Season 2 consists of ten episodes, co-written by Tancharoen, Josh Baizer and Marshall Johnson, directed by Tancharoen, featuring a crew of about 90-100 people, and will continue to be broadcast exclusively on the Machinima YouTube channel by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. Bandito Brothers replaces Goldtooth Creative to handle visual effects. Production ends in December 2012.

Development of season 3

At Comic-Con 2013, Tancharoen noted that Ryan will not return as Sonya for the second season due to his commitment to Body of Proof, but hopes to bring him back for a third, where Kabal is also scheduled to appear after Tancharoen can not accommodate the characters in the second season due to budget constraints. Tancharoen left the series in October 2013 due to a lack of progress on the reboot film. However, on March 27, 2014, he told Nerd Reactor that he and Warner Bros were still planning season 3 with him directing. On January 13, 2015, martial arts trainer and action coordinator Garrett Warren confirmed his involvement in the third season of Mortal Kombat Legacy, without revealing his role. Casper Van Dien confirmed his involvement in the new season by posting photos of his martial arts training with fellow second-season star Mark Dacascos. On January 17, 2015, Van Dien posted a script photo for "Mortal Kombat 3," credits John Cabrera as a writer. Garrett Warren confirmed the filming has begun on January 19, 2015. It has been announced that Ron Yuan, Booboo Stewart, Lewis Tan, Ray Park, and Haley Lu Richardson serve as Hanzo, Takeda, Kung Jin, Erron Black, and Cassie Cage. Webseries should be released in 2016, but this is not the case. In January 2018, season 3 of the Legacy has not been announced, confirmed, or posted, and the last posting date of Mortal Kombat Legacy last page back to 2014.

Reception

Reviews on Mortal Kombat Legacy are generally positive. The first episode became the most watched YouTube video for the week, garnering 5.5 million views, while short Tancharoen, also considered a success, only received a total of 2.1 million on official accounts. President Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, Thomas Gewecke, expressed excitement about the first episode and its prospects for future adaptation, saying, "This is a very powerful, powerful and well-done film. This is a reinterpretation of the franchise in direct action, the form we want to explore as different concepts and see what approach works best. "The second episode aired with much less attention, having only a quarter of the look when compared to the first episode. The release of the fifth episode only garnered 424,000 views in the first 24 hours. One day after the release of episode five, the total views for the entire series to date exceed 30,000,000.

IGN describes Legacy as "the most-produced web series", specifically mentioning episode one for "effective action sequences and some great cinematography". It looked favorable on episode 4 for the first use of "amazingly effective" animation and more "poetic" sound narration, sensor deletion, "interesting character characters and fascinating fantasies [and] beautiful land from Outworld". Episode five is praised for the score, attention is given to the development of characters and stories, editing and visual effects "pretty great". CraveOnline praised the animation style used in episode four, saying the legacy that appears in Mileena and the Tarkatan invasion is the best part of the episode. G4TV praised the third episode in the series because of its change towards character development, while not sacrificing the sequence of actions defined in the first two episodes. It "enables the series to broaden the horizon a bit" by creating a fun Johnny Cage, remarking, "finally liberating and making you appreciate the characters in a completely new way". Houston Press also joined in praise of the devotion series for character development at the release of Raiden episode. They claimed that while the martial arts took the backseat, Raiden's drama "Christlike" was executed well, giving the audience an excuse to identify his character in a way that the franchise could never do. The Escapist calls the Scorpion and Sub-Zero episodes themed 7 "one of the best episodes" in the series, lending emotional weight to the most famous story in the franchise.

The series also received fair criticism, led by the same institution that has praised it. CraveOnline is not happy with the new Johnny Cage, judging episode 4 of 10, claiming Mullin 'Johnny Cage' does not quite have the right look, good submissions or impressive martial arts moves. IGN notes episode one that "the production values do not seem as strict and concise as [ Rebirth ]" in addition to light stories and flat editing and performances.

By far the most criticized are the episodes four and five for their shift from the realistic style of and the first few episodes, to the "traditional mythology known to old Kombat fans". Tancharoen also admitted that the audience was divided that the episode "Kitana & Mileena" was made, stating that their episode is a story that can not be told in a realistic environment, and that Warner Bros. "Unlike episode four, IGN criticizes the use of current animations, stating that the cost of an episode of energy and create the elasticity of a continuity fault. Less expensive make-up, costume effects, and designs that are set up due to budget constraints, and a short time is one of the other criticisms. After the release of the sixth episode on Raiden, the Houston Press suggested that Tancharoen was forced to point the four and five episodes into Warner Bros's traditional mystery Warner Bros to test how fans would react. Episode six, according to the reviewer, is a studio that allows Tancharoen to return to his own style, ultimately giving "cinematic prowess" and "best episode" he has done so far. Maybe even better than the original Mortal Kombat: Rebirth "The Refusing Film School complained about the series' expectations that viewers will have knowledge of franchise history, explaining that without prior knowledge of the game, the viewer is left with too many questions that may never be answered.

After discussions in 2011 Comic-Con with Uziel and Edcoon's Edward Mortal Kombat, Tancharoen said to expect the origin story in the Rebirth style and Legacy as opposed to from traditional mythology Mortal Kombat . He said, "I've always been a fan of properties like Batman where you can expand the universe in different directions. Mortal Kombat big enough so you can allow for some different types of story telling. "But for his continuity with the web series, he said," You do not have to look at all the ten previous episodes - or have played video games - to understand the movie.
