Incident

The incident took place in downtown Oakland at Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) The NL bus line to San Francisco, and involved a black man, identified as Michael Lovette, and an older white-bearded man identified as Thomas Alexander Bruso, later referred to as the "Epic Beard Man". The events on the bus were recorded by Iyanna Washington.

In the video, Bruso was seen wearing a light blue T-shirt that read "I WEDDING MOTHER" in the back. Bruso sat across from Lovette near the back of the bus. Exactly how the argument began to be unclear, but the conversation quickly became hot, with Lovette angrily asked Bruso, "Why do brothers have to spit out your shoes?" Bruso had stated in later interviews that Lovette was trying to make his racial remarks. Bruso then tells Lovette how he refers to someone who "will polish his shoes" and that a brother "can be anyone, he can be Chinese!" After additional exchange fees, Bruso said, "You do not frighten this white boy," and walks away from Lovette to the front of the bus.

Most of their conversations were not heard, and some motorists prevented Lovette from approaching Bruso, while others like Washington pushed him to attack, saying "Tell me again, Pinky!" "When the verbal exchange begins to subside again, Lovette starts walking back to her seat, at which point Bruso shouts," I see tough people like you and I slap them! " "Lovette responded" What !? ", turned and walked back toward Bruso, and swung toward Bruso, and Bruso stood up and beat Lovette a few times, dropping Lovette to the floor. The view of the people disappeared briefly as Washington moved closer to the commotion; when looking at the resume, Bruso is shown with Lovette, who is now bleeding from a facial wound, in his hand Bruso releases Lovette, exclaims, "I told you not to joke with me!", and then get out of the bus, and still yell when the bus stops next. After the exchange Lovette returns to her seat at the back of the bus, then takes the bag left by Bruso and takes it to the back of the bus Washington offers Lovette the use of the tape if she wants to sue, but Lovette never acknowledges the offer, instead asks for an ambulance.

In the second video, Bruso, now on the road, continues to shout about the fight. He loudly called Vietnam and kicked a newspaper dispenser before leaving. Both men were treated at a local hospital for their injuries. Bruso underwent a psychiatric evaluation at John George Psychiatric Pavilion in San Leandro. No man was arrested.

Videographer response

On February 17, 2010, Washington posted its own perspective on the event on YouTube. In this video, Washington says he hopes to "clear things up" (see 0: 38). He goes on to say, "I want to apologize to anyone who is offended by any part of this video" (see 3: 14--3: 21).

Responding to the accusation that Lovette is his "friend", "Washington explains," I have never seen these two men before in my life, "and claimed that he had no intention of stealing Bruso's purse (though his colleague said," through that nonsense " was in Bruso's bag that he took from the front of the bus and was brought back to his seat.In the next interview, when asked if he got his "stuff back," said Bruso, the Sheriff's deputy finally returned his belongings, except for an ID and some money , "about three hours later." View @ (3: 55--4: 05) Washington also appeared in a local CBS news video interview that gave his version of events.
