DreamWorks Animation, LLC (better known as DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks Animation SKG , or just DreamWorks ) is an animation studio America which is a subsidiary of Universal Pictures. It is based in Glendale, California and produces animated films, television programs and online virtual gaming. Today's studios have released a total of 35 widescreen films including the Shrek , Madagascar , Kung Fu Panda , How to Train Your Dragons , The Croods , Troll and The Boss Baby . Originally formed under the banner of DreamWorks main studio in 1997 by some Amblimation alumni of the previous animation branch of Amblin Entertainment, it spun into a separate public company in 2004. DreamWorks Animation currently maintains the Glendale campus, as well as satellite studios in India and China. On August 22, 2016, NBC Universal acquired DreamWorks Animation for $ 3.8 billion, making it a division of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

As of October 2017, the films have grossed $ 14.457 billion worldwide, with an average gross of $ 417.8 million per film. Shrek 2 (2004) is one of the 50 best-selling films of all time, and fourteen films are the 50 best-selling animated films, with Shrek 2 being the ninth of all time. Although the studio also made traditional animated films in the past, as well as the joint stop-motion production with Aardman Animations, all of their films now use computer animation. The studio has received three Academy Awards, as well as 41 Emmy Awards and many Annie Awards, as well as several Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. In recent years, the animation studio has acquired and created a new division in an effort to diversify beyond the high risk film business.

The film produced by DreamWorks Animation was previously distributed worldwide by DreamWorks Pictures from 1998 to 2005, Paramount Pictures from 2006 to 2012 and 20th Century Fox from 2013 to 2017. Universal Pictures will distribute the next DreamWorks Animation movie, starting from March 1, 2019, with the release of How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World .

Histori

DreamWorks SKG era (1994-2004)

On October 12, 1994, three entertainment players, film director and producer Steven Spielberg, former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, and music executive David Geffen, founded DreamWorks SKG. To build a talent base, Spielberg brought in artists from London-based studio Amblimation, while Katzenberg recruited top animation staff from Disney. Some Amblimation artists came to DreamWorks in 1995, when the studio's final feature was completed, with the rest doing so after the studio's closure in 1997.

In 1995, DreamWorks signed a joint production agreement with Pacific Data Images to form a subsidiary of PDI, LLC (PDI owns 60% PDI, LLC, while DreamWorks SKG owns 40%). This new unit will produce feature-generated feature films, starting with Antz in 1998. In the same year DreamWorks SKG produced The Prince of Egypt , which uses traditional CGI and technology animation techniques.

In 1997, DreamWorks partnered with Aardman Animations, a stop-motion British animation studio, to produce and distribute Chicken Run (2000), a pre-production stop-motion film. Two years later they extend the deal for an additional four films. With Aardman performing stop-motion, they cover all three main styles, in addition to traditional animations and computers. The partnership has DreamWorks participating in the production of stop-motion films in Bristol, and also has Aardman participating in several CGI films made in the United States.

Three years later, DreamWorks SKG created DreamWorks Animation, a new business division that will regularly produce both types of feature animated movies. In the same year, DW acquired a majority stake (90%) in PDI, and turned it into PDI/DreamWorks, the new business division of Northern California. In 2001, Shrek was released and later won the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Due to the success of the CGI animated film, DWA decided the same year to get out of the hand-drawn animation business after two of a total of four hand-picked films. Starting with Shrek 2 (2004), all released films, other than those produced together with Aardman, are expected to be produced with CGI. The release of Shrek 2 and Shark Tale also made DWA the first studio to produce two CGI animation features in a year.

Public company (2004-2016)

The animation division was split into a public company called DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. on 27 October 2004. Katzenberg leads a new division, while Spielberg and Geffen remain joined as investors and consultants. DWA also inherited interests in PDI/DreamWorks. They made a deal with their ex-parents to distribute all their movies until they gave them twelve new movies, or December 12, 2010, whichever was the last.

On January 31, 2006, DWA entered into a distribution agreement with Paramount Pictures, which acquired DWA's former parent and distribution partner, DreamWorks SKG. The agreement grants Paramount the worldwide right to distribute all animated films, including previously released movies, to the delivery of 13 new animated films or December 31, 2012, whichever is the last.

The DWA partnership with Aardman ended after the release of Flushed Away in November 2006, after submitting three of five films. The announcement was made before the film's release, on October 3, citing "creative differences". DWA retains joint ownership of all films produced together with Aardman, with the exception of being Wallace & amp; Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), where they only keep distribution rights worldwide.

On March 13, 2007, DreamWorks Animation announced it would release all its movies, starting with Monster vs Aliens (2009), in 3D stereoscopic. Together with Intel, they jointly developed new 3D filmmaking technology, InTru3D.

In 2008, DWA expanded its production line to Bangalore, India, where they set up a special unit within Technicolor, named DreamWorks Dedicated Unit. The unit is owned by Technicolor, but DreamWorks employs and trains animators, who then contribute to DreamWorks projects. DDU initially only works on TV specials, such as Merry Madagascar (2009), Scared Shrekless (2010), and DVD projects. Eventually they began contributing to the DreamWorks feature films as well, starting with animate parts of Puss in Boots (2011).

Since 2009, the studio has been a regular guest on the Fortune Magazine list of 100 Best Companies to Work for. As the only entertainment company on the list, they ranked 47th in 2009, 6th in 2010, 10th in 2011, 14th in 2012 and 12th in 2013.

Starting in 2010, the studio has planned to release five screen films for every two years, but next year the studio is reviewing their plans, "but after 2012 Katzenberg says the studio will play it with ears, even if it means leaving his statement that DWA will try to release three pictures in a year, every other year. "In 2010, DWA became the first studio to release three CG animated films for a year. In the same year, the company bought the film rights to the Trolls franchise.

Diversification and expansion (2012-2015)

In July 2012, DreamWorks Animation won a $ 155 million bid to acquire Classic Media, which has since been renamed DreamWorks Classics. In August 2012, DreamWorks Animation established a joint venture with a Chinese investment company to set up a Shanghai-based entertainment company, Oriental DreamWorks, to develop and produce original Chinese films and their derivatives.

According to the Los Angeles Times , DreamWorks Animation is in talks with Sony Pictures to distribute upcoming movies, such as the 2013 release of The Croods and Turbo . The report also cites the possibility that Sony will handle US distribution while 20th Century Fox will handle international distribution. Updates to the deal with Paramount are also open, but only with more favorable terms for Paramount (they even offer a one-year contract extension, but Katzenberg wants to get a better deal). In August 2012, DreamWorks Animation signed a five-year distribution agreement with 20th Century Fox for all regions. However, the deal does not include the previously released movie distribution rights acquired by DWA from Paramount in 2014. Rise of the Guardians (2012) is the last DreamWorks Animation film distributed by Paramount Pictures, and > The Croods became the first DreamWorks Animation film to be distributed by 20th Century Fox.

On April 11, 2013, DreamWorks Animation announced that it has acquired intellectual property for the Troll franchise from Dam and Dam Family. DreamWorks Animation, which has a "grand franchise plan", has become an exclusive worldwide licensor of merchandise, except for Scandinavia, where Dam Things remains a licensor. On May 1st, Katzenberg and DWA announced their intention to purchase the AwesomenessTV YouTube channel, completed later this month.

The following month, DWA announced a multi-year content agreement to provide 300 hours of exclusive original video content for Netflix Internet streaming media providers. Part of the intent of the deal is part of building a more reliable income for DWA to finance financial risk relying solely on the movie theater market. The next day, DWA completed a five-year license agreement with Super RTL to launch that September for the Classic Media library and Netflix slate. With Netflix and Super RTL deals in place for TV, DWA announced an executive recruitment for its new television group DreamWorks Animation Television in late July. Former Nickelodeon senior executive Margie Cohn became Head of Television for the group. In September of the same year, DreamWorks announced that it had acquired the London-based Chapman Entertainment TV library with a program to be distributed through DWA-based TV distribution operations in the UK.

The following year, in February, DreamWorks announced the foundation of a new publishing division called DreamWorks Press , to publish books in print and digital form. In June, the rights to Felix the Cat were acquired by DreamWorks Animation from Felix the Cat Productions, owned by Don Oriolo. The same month, DreamWorksTV channel debuted on YouTube and operated by AwesomenessTV. DreamWorks Animation then purchased the Paramount distribution rights to the pre-2013 library in July, and since then, DreamWorks Animation's distribution partner 20th Century Fox has distributed the library on their behalf until 2018, where the sister studio of DreamWorks Animation Universal Pictures has assumed this responsibility.

The studio is reportedly to be acquired two separate times by the end of 2014. First, in September it was reported that the SoftBank Japanese conglomerate was in talks to get DreamWorks Animation for $ 3.4 billion, but the following day it was reported that SoftBank had withdrawn its offer. Next on November 12, it was reported that Hasbro was in talks to buy DreamWorks Animation in November. The proposal was reportedly calling for a joint company to take the name of "DreamWorks-Hasbro" and for Jeffrey Katzenberg to be its chairman, but as a matter of policy both Hasbro and DWA did not publicly comment on mergers and acquisitions. Two days later, the talks were reported to have failed.

DreamWorks Animation announces their launch to the television broadcasting business on December 9, 2014, by creating their own channel called Channel DreamWorks. With HBO Asia handling affiliate sales, marketing and technical services, this network will be launched in some Asian countries (except China and Japan) in the second half of 2015. The channel was first aired in English on August 1, 2015, and Thai language dubbed channel was launched in September 2015. Also in December, DWA sold a 25% stake in AwesomenessTV for $ 81.25 million to Hearst Corporation.

On January 5, 2015, DreamWorks Animation announced that Bonnie Arnold, the drill series producer and Mireille Soria, the series producer was named the co-president of the studio's feature animation division. At the same time, it was also announced that Bill Damaschke would resign from his position as Chief Creative Officer. So far, under the direction of Arnold and Soria, they signed Jason Reitman and Edgar Wright to work on their own animated debut. Two weeks later, PDI/DreamWorks was fully closed as part of a larger restructuring effort for its parent company.

Universal Image Era (2016-present)

On April 28, 2016, Comcast officially announced that the NBCUniversal division intended to earn DreamWorks Animation for $ 3.8 billion, valuing the company at $ 41 per share. Jeffrey Katzenberg will remain involved in the company as DreamWorks head of New Media, but handed over the studio's control to Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri, who will oversee both. The sale was approved by the board members, but was subject to regulatory approval.

At the TMT Guggenheim Partners Symposium, NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke discusses how purchasing DWA will fit his business strategy. Burke explains that Meledandri plans to "take on many of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises," and that the ultimate goal is to "take a one-digit low-yield from the film business and transform it into the kind of business that different "by creating new intellectual property that can be merchandised and adapted into amusement park attractions. Burke reiterated his commitment to animated features, stating that Universal will be able to release as many as four animated films per year, shared between DreamWorks and Illumination. Burke also underlined that the purchase would benefit Universal's widespread presence in China (where he built the new Universal Studio park in Beijing). DreamWorks Animation's final film with 20th Century Fox is Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie , and their first film with Universal Pictures will be the How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World with > Shame , Troll World Tour , The Croods 2 , Baby Boss 2 , and Jack Ceram in development.

On June 21, 2016, the acquisition was approved by the United States Department of Justice. Purchases closed on August 22, 2016; the company now operates as a division of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

Although a spokesperson stated that Meledandri will work with Universal Pictures to determine "the most effective path for LightWorks Illumination and Animation", she does not take over DreamWorks as previously announced, and the studios remain separate. Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria retained their position as DreamWorks Feature Animation division president, while Margie Cohn will lead the television animation division for the entire Universal Pictures group. Digital division, marketing, consumer products, and DreamWorks games will be absorbed into NBCUniversal.

On December 21, 2016, Mireille Soria resigned from her position as vice president of the DreamWorks Feature Animation division.

In January 2017, Christopher DeFaria joined DreamWorks Animation in a newly created position as president of the DreamWorks Feature Animation Group. As president, DeFaria will oversee all aspects of the DWA feature animation business, including slate strategy, development, production; innovation and technology; and business affairs.

On February 15, 2017, Universal acquired a minority stake in Amblin Partners, strengthening the relationship between Universal and Amblin, and reuniting the minority percentage of the DreamWorks Pictures label with DreamWorks Animation.

On August 1, 2017, it was announced that DreamWorks Animation and Blumhouse Productions will be working on Blumhouse's first animated movie, Spooky Jack . The film will be released on September 17, 2021.

On October 6, it was announced that Abhijay Prakash would become the COO of DWA.

On November 13, 2017, it was announced that DreamWorks Animation has started a shorts program, called DreamWorks Shorts, which will feature original animated short films before feature films DWA, similar to what Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios do for films their features. The first short film to be produced under the program is Bird Karma , which will premiere in Spring 2018.

On November 16, 2017, it was reported that the owner of NBCUniversal Comcast was trying to buy 21st Century Fox, following the news 10 days earlier that The Walt Disney Company negotiated with Fox to get the same asset. Like Disney, the deal includes 20th Century Fox - which has distribution rights for the DreamWorks Animation release 2013-2017 - and cable entertainment and satellite broadcasting networks including FX Networks, Fox Sports Networks, National Geographic Partners and Fox International Channels. This does not include Fox network broadcasts and Fox Television Station, Fox Sports, and Fox News Channels units, all of which will be split into new independent companies.

However, on December 11, 2017, Comcast officially dropped the offer, saying that "We never got the level of engagement needed to make a definitive bid." On December 14, Disney officially confirmed the acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which is currently under review from the US Department of Justice's Antitrust Department. However, on February 2, 2018, Universal has taken over the distribution rights to the DreamWorks Animation library.

On February 2, 2018, CMC Capital Partners purchased DreamWorks' shares, Shanghai Media Group, and Shanghai Alliance Investment at Oriental DreamWorks, owning the studio as a whole; Oriental DreamWorks was later renamed "Pearl Studio". Pearl Studio will continue to collaborate with DreamWorks to produce upcoming movies, Abominable , with original movie director Jill Culton back.

On February 27, 2018, DreamWorks Animation announced that Kelly Betz has been promoted as Chief Financial Officer.

On May 2, 2018, Hulu (Disney, Fox, and NBCUniversal each own 30% of it) announced its first licensing agreement with DreamWorks Animation, becoming the exclusive streaming home for future DWA movie movies, as well as library films. DWA has been streamed exclusively through Netflix since 2013.
