The early years of Papanasam Sivan were spent in the Travancore area of ââKerala where kings despised art. He was born in the village of Polagam in the district of Thanjavur, which is home to the musical trinity of the famous Carnatic music. The name he gave was Ramaiya. In 1897, when Ramaiya was only seven years old, his father died. His mother, Yogambal, along with his sons, abandoned Thanjavur and was forced to move to Trivandram (now Thiruvananthapuram) in 1899 to seek his uncle's help. In Thiruvananthapuram, Ramaiya studied Malayalam and then he joined the Sanskrit Maharaja college and obtained a degree in grammar.
His bale was very religious, and with the death of his mother, Yogambal in 1910, when he was twenty years old, became taller. He wanders from place to place visiting temples and singing hymns. Ramaiya had been an active participant in musical sessions at Neelakandasivan's home in Thiruvananthapuram. Thus he learned much of Neelakandasivan's musical composition. In this period, his wandering will take him regularly to the temple at Papanasam, where he will smear the bhasma throughout his body. Therefore people began to call it Papanasam Sivan, a name he later came to recognize.
He took his first music lesson from Noorani Mahadeva Bhagavatar, son of Parameswara Bhagavatar. Then he became a student of Konerirajapuram Vaidyanath Iyer, a famous musician, under the guidance of Sivan who developed into a perfect artist.
Despite his in-depth knowledge of music, Papanasam Sivan is more interested in the devotional aspect of music. He prefers singing praise songs and encourages other singers to take part in music with him. Papanasam Sivan is a regular at all major temple festivals in South India with songs of his musings.
Then in 1962 Papanasam Sivan received the Presidential award and in 1969 he received the Sangeetha Kalasikhamani award awarded to him by the Indian Art Society, Chennai. He was awarded Sangita Kalanidhi in 1971.
