Biography
Garrett studied video production at the university and was originally intended to be a game journalist. His early YouTube work consisted of a "Let's Play" video he made for his own entertainment. When he realizes that his main audience is children, he changes his work orientation to being family-friendly. As the video becomes popular, Garrett leaves his job as a waitress to focus on producing content on a full-time basis.
Garrett's YouTube channel is for children, and listeners are mostly aged 6 to 14. As a Stampy Cat character, orange and white cats, Garrett tells the story in Minecraft and other games. She gives viewers ideas for activities to do with their friends. Garrett described the character as "a larger, brighter, and better version" of him. He receives correspondence from viewers and thinks they see him as a friend, rather than "presenter in the studio". Other characters in the video include iBallisticSquid, the YouTube name of Garrett's friend David Spencer and Sqaishey Quack, a duck character played by Garrett's partner Bethany Bates. Jordan Shapiro from Forbes.com said that "he's done a wonderful job by bringing the positive aspects of Minecraft - the educational potential of the game - to the surface." Common Sense Media's Caroline Knorr described Stampy's presentation as the best for young fans and that "Stampy felt the cross between Pee-Wee Herman and Mr. Rogers."
On April 25, 2015, Garrett launched a spin-off educational YouTube channel in collaboration with Maker Studios.
