Rickrolling In Real Life WITH RICK ASTLEY - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

Rickrolling , or rick-rolling , is an Internet joke and meme that involves the unexpected appearance of a music video for Rick Astley's 1987 song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a type of bait and switches using a veiled hyperlink. They lead to a music video that believes they are accessing some unrelated material said to have been hacked . This trend has expanded to the annoying or humorous performance of the song in other situations, such as Astley's own live performance at Macy's 2008 Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Histori

Astley recorded "Never Gonna Give You Up" on her 1987 album Whenever you need someone . The song, her solo debut single, was the number one hit on several international charts, including Billboard Hot 100, Adult Contemporary Adult Songs and UK Singles Chart. As a means of promoting the song, it was also made into Astley's first music video, featuring him performing songs while dancing.

Rickrolling is reported to have started as a variant of the previous joke of the 4chan imageboard known as duckrolling. The site director, who used the name "moot", began to replace the word "egg" on the site with the word "duck". When the word "eggroll" turns into "duckroll", other users start to alter innocent-looking links to a place (such as a picture or news story) to redirect the reader to a thread or a site containing a duck image edited with a wheel. The user at the time was said to have "drooped".

The first example of a rickroll occurred in May 2007 on/v/, 4chan video game board, where links to Rick Astley videos were claimed to be mirrors of the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV (which was not available due to traffic solid). The joke was limited to 4chan for a very short period.

In May 2008, the practice has spread beyond 4chan and became an Internet phenomenon, which eventually attracted coverage in the mainstream media. The April 2008 poll by SurveyUSA estimates that at least 18 million American adults have been criticized. In September 2009, Wired magazine published a guide to modern hoaxes listed as one of the more familiar beginner hoaxes, along with fake e-mail letters. This term has been extended to the use of simple and hidden song lyrics. The cover version of "Never Gonna Give You Up" has also been used as part of rickrolling; before the premiere of 2018 Season 2 of Westworld , the show creator released a video that purportedly became a spoiler guide for the entire season in advance, but instead featured lead actress Evan Rachel Wood singing the song while accompanied by a pianist.

The original video on YouTube from 2007 used for rickrolling was removed for violation in February 2010 but the removal was revoked in a single day. It's down again on July 18, 2014. It has since reopened and has gained over 77 million views per December 2017. RickAstleyVEVO's channel on YouTube uploaded another version on October 24, 2009 which already has more than 420 million views in April 2018.

Effect on Astley and reaction

In a March 2008 interview, Astley said he found Scientology manipulation "funny"; he also said that he would not try to exploit the rickroll phenomenon with his new recordings or remixes of his own, but he would be happy if there were other artists who mixed it up again. Overall, Astley is not bothered by the phenomenon, stating that he found it "weird and funny" and that his only concern is that "his daughter is not ashamed about it." A spokeswoman for the record label Astley issued a comment that shows Astley's interest in the phenomenon has faded, as they say, "I'm sorry, but he's done talking about Rickrolling".

In November 2008, Rick Astley was nominated for "Best Act Ever" at the MTV Europe Music Awards after an online nomination form was flooded with votes. The drive to make Astley an award winner, as well as efforts to encourage MTV to personally invite Astley to the award ceremony, continued after the announcement. On October 10, the Astley website confirmed that an invitation for the award has been received. On November 6, 2008, just hours before the ceremony was due to air, it was reported that MTV Europe did not want to give Astley an award at the ceremony, instead of wanting to present it in the future. Many fans who chose Astley felt the award ceremony failed to recognize him as a legit artist. Astley stated in an interview that he felt the award was "crazy", but noted that he thought that "MTV was really hacked", and then thanked everyone who voted for him.

In 2009, Astley wrote about the controversial 4chan stance for the yearly edition of Time magazine Time 100 , and was grateful for the rickrolling phenomenon.

According to the The Register , in 2010, Astley only received $ 12 direct in performance royalties from YouTube. Although at the time the song has been screened 39 million times, Astley does not write songs and only accepts part of the copyrighted sound recordings.
