The Nightwatchman is a solo project of American musician Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Street Sweeper Social Club and former Audioslave). Morello began performing as Nightwatchman in 2003 as an outlet for his political views as he played apolitical music with Audioslave.

Morello created the identity of The Nightwatchman, inspired by Bruce Springsteen's The Ghost of Tom Joad album, when the desire to return to political activity in his music hit him in 2003, after more than a year playing without activist rock at Audioslave. Morello describes The Nightwatchman as "the black Robin Hood of 21st century music" and "the reaction to the banned war, the reaction to the first attack, torture, secret prisons, illegal spying on Americans. This is a reaction to war crimes, is a reaction to some of the companies that grew rich in this war as people begged for food on the streets of the city. "More specifically, he later explained that the format was inspired by Billy Bragg's long-time social and political activist/musician. Morello first saw him perform at concert c. 1994, playing "fearlessly" in front of a crowd of 8,000 people in a tent with big rock bands at the time. Nightwatchman first started playing political folk acoustic music at a Los Angeles coffeehouse just before the small crowd, and soon after continuing on Billy Bragg's tour Tell Us The Truth.

The Tell Us the Truth tour is supported by unions, environmental and media reform groups including Common Cause, Free Press, and A.F.L.-C.I.O. with the ultimate goal of "telling music fans, and exposing and challenging major media failures in the United States." Her Nightwatchman Personif has been compared to Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. He initially had no plans to record, but later recorded the song "No One Left" for Fahrenheit 9/11 Inspired Songs and Artists . At the Bonnaroo Festival in 2007, The Nightwatchman performed the Rage Against the Machine "Guerrilla Radio" song to protest George W. Bush.

One Person Revolution

In February 2007, he announced his solo album, One Man Revolution, which was released on April 24, 2007 in the US and May 7 worldwide. The first stage of The Nightwatchman was played on June 17, 2007 at the House of Blues in Dallas, Texas. Morello has toured since the CD was released and said he plans to tour again in the US in the fall. After seeing the early play of Michael Moore movie Sicko Morello wrote the song, "Alone Without You" featured in the movie cover credits and also with a music video directed by Moore in a DVD release. The song is also available as an iTunes bonus track for One Man Revolution . Morello toured in support of the album as an opening act for Ben Harper. During this tour, Morello joined Harper on stage in several occasions for Bob Dylan's "Master of War" cover, where he played an electric guitar in the style he is best known for. Other prominent musicians who Morello shared the stage with during the One Man Revolution tour included Serj Tankian, Perry Farrell, Switchfoot's Jon Foreman, Jennings Shooter, Nuno Bettencourt, Dog Sen from Cypress Hill, Jill Sobule, Boots Riley , Alexi Murdoch, Wayne Kramer from MC5, Slash, and many others.

City of Dongeng

The Fabled City album was released on September 30, 2008. Two songs were not recorded, "Midnight in the City of Destruction" (on New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina) and "King of Hell" (written about Guantanamo Bay) , had previously been leaked on The Nightwatchman MySpace or done during the live set.

So far, Carl Restivo of the Satellite Party has been confirmed to be a part of The Freedom Fighters as the second guitarist. To promote Morello's new album and band appear both on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and on Late Night with Conan O'Brien before out on 'The Fabled City tour', the eighteen tour stops in the United States.

World Wide Rebel Songs

To support many unions affected by anti-negotiating/bargaining legislation resulting from the Wisconsin 2011 budget protest, Morello appeared outside the Madison Capitol building on February 21, 2011, to rally support. He also worked with fellow rock musician Wayne Kramer to support the protesters performing the title song from his upcoming album, World Wide Rebel Songs . Kramer appeared on the song on the album, performing backing vocals.

On The Nightwatchman website, it was announced that Morello had signed a contract with New West Records label to release his third album as the Nightwatchman moniker, World Wide Rebel Songs , which will be out on August 30, 2011.

Prior to the release of the album, Morello released an EP titled Union Town on May 17, 2011. All proceeds from EP sales will be used to benefit the United States Labor Fund.

In October 2011 and on May Day 2012, Morello appeared in support of protesters in Occupy LA and Occupy Wall Street.
