Abelardo GutiÃÆ' Â © rrez Alanya (born 24 September 1957), known by his nickname " Tongo ", is a Peruvian singer-songwriter and actor. He began his musical career in 1980 as a peruvian cumbian singer, a popular type of music. Tongo is largely unknown outside his musical niche (traditionally from the lower classes) until his song "La pituca", whose theme focuses on social status and inequality, reaches national notation at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In 2010, the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio listed Tongo as one of the most popular performers in Peruvian show business.

An important part of Tongo's success is his good relationship with Peru's mainstream media and his willingness to use his popularity toward commercial advertising and political campaigns. Her tumultuous friendship with Emmy Award-winning writer and journalist Jaime Bayly proved very important for the emergence of the famous Tongo, when she was a regular guest on Bayly's television program in Peru. In the political sphere, in addition to promoting Bayly's election to the presidency with the song "Jaime the presidente", Tongo failed to run for Congress in 2005 and caused controversy (and tension in his friendship with Bayly) when he participated in the Lourdes Flores Nano 2010 campaign for mayor Lima.

Tongo's national leadership reached its peak in 2008, when he released a deliberately English-language version of "La pituca". Songs that are famous for orthographic errors and wrong verse translations, surpassed original popularity and even became a YouTube hit. Since then, he has continued to draw public attention to cover versions of the main songs deliberately, including "Ai Se Eu Te Pego", "Baby" Justin Bieber, Psy "Gangnam Style" and System Of A Down "Chop Suey!".

 2010-2016

In 2011, after several years without recording new big hits, Tongo made a cover version for the Beatles song "Let it Be". Under the title "Lady bi", the song is the first cover version of Tongo's song in English. That same year he did it in Peru's Teleton. Nevertheless, Tongo's great success for 2011 is his cover version of Justin Bieber's popular song "Baby". The cover became an instant internet sensation, and helped in Tongo's return to the mainstream music venues in Peru. In October of that year, Grammy winner-award-winning Latin songwriter Gian Marco Zignago in a light Facebook message congratulated the singer for his new hit cover (in Spanish: "Ayyyy! Tongo, Tongo, Tongo! TÃÆ'º eres el ÃÆ'ºnico en este planeta que puede hacer este tipo de cosas! jajajajaja! un ÃÆ' Â © xito !! jajajajaja! "). Both songs follow the trend of "La pituca (en Ingles)" because they deliberately use verbally wrong English.

2017 Youtube Covers

By the end of 2016, Tongo features a cover of "Chop Suey" by System of a Down, which gets the attention of the YouTube Channel and other media. It was followed by the cover of "Numb" by Linkin Park, which reached over 1 million views in 5 days. During Linkin Park's One-Light Tour visit to Peru, Mike Shinoda reacted to the song with a joke, "Oh my God! It's amazing! It's fantastic! I love this (...) Can we put that? It's amazing, end of show music? "Two weeks later, Shinoda distributed her song via her Twitter account.

On July 20, 2017, after the death of Chester Bennington, Tongo announced he would honor his memory by making the cover of "In the End". The cover was released on August 27, 2017.

Personal life

In 2010, Jaime Bayly announced that he would make Tongo as his third child's godfather. The singer reacts positively to the announcement and, proclaiming himself as an oracle, estimates the boy will become a male Sporting Cristal player and future.

In 2011, Tongo presented a song for Pisco Sour in the middle of a celebration for a national cocktail holiday. The singer stated, "Pisco is ours and Pisco Sour too." This Saturday, we have to defend and celebrate as it should be, even though everything is moderate: if you celebrate, do not drive "(" El pisco es nuestro y el pisco sour tambiÃÆ' Â © n. Deboos de defender y festejar como se debe este sÃÆ'¡bado. ojo, pero todo con moderaciÃÆ'³n: the celebra, no maneje ").

Since some time ago, Tongo was diagnosed with diabetes. In June 2017, he was taken to the hospital in his town, and uploaded a video telling this story.
