Webdriver Torso is YouTube's automated account, created by Google on March 7, 2013, which often post videos featuring simple slides accompanied by a beep, to test the performance of the website. The channel attracted public attention in 2014, when it became a source of speculation for viewers who discovered it and noted its unusual nature, as well as three unusual videos featuring jokes. It remains a popular mystery until YouTube cheerfully admits that it exists as an internal testing utility. This channel stopped posting videos at the same rate at 624,735 videos on May 4, 2017. This continued with upload on May 18, 2018.

Uploads

From 23 September 2013 to 4 May 2017, the channel uploaded a total of 624,735 videos. The interval between one upload and another usually lasts between 1 and 15 minutes, but the popular vote is up to an hour. With the exception of three, all videos follow the standards outlined below. Channel stopped uploading on May 4, 2017, but continues to upload on May 18, 2018.

Most videos are 11 seconds long, though some videos also take about 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 25 minutes. Their slide show displays about 1 second slide each. Each slide consists of a solid white background that overlaps with two solid colored rectangles, one red and the other blue. Both rectangles have random sizes, shapes, and positions on the slide. When two overlap, red rectangles always appear above the blue ones, and on rare occasions, red rectangles completely cover the blue ones. Each slide has a random computer-generated wave tone. In the corner of each video, it says "aqua.flv - slide (four digit digits)". The initial video is called "aqua", which is then changed to "tmp", which stands for "template" or "temporary", followed by random characters.

Abnormal uploads

This channel has three videos that do not follow channel standards, show references or internal jokes. One of them, titled "tmpRkRL85", appears the usual video up the red rectangle into the silhouette of Rick Astley dancing (reference Rickrolling phenomenon) in the second half of the video. The video "00014" is a recording recorded in Paris that shows the Eiffel Tower lit up at night. At the end of the video, the camera is laid, and the Facebook Webdriver Torso page looks for some frames. The latter, "0.455442373793", only visible in France, requires a payment of 1.99 euros to watch, and is only paid with a French credit card. This shows the episode of the adult American Aqua Teen Hunger Force cartoon dubbed in Spanish.

Speculation

Before YouTube confirmed the channel as a trial channel, there was some speculation about the identity and content of the video. Hypotheses about channel goals include spy messages, contacts with alien life forms, construction plans and recruitment programs Cicada 3301.

Unexplained reference

While Google has clarified channel goals, this does not explain the seemingly funny reference contained in some videos. These include episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the shadow of Rick Astley, and the recording of the Eiffel Tower. In the latter, Webdriver Torso at one time commented "Matei is very intelligent". "Matei" is not known, but Basarab Matei, Matei Mancas, Matei Gruber, and Matei Ciocarlie have been suspected. Comment "Matei" apparently deleted at a later time.

Discovery Soggetto Ventuno

An Italian blogger named "Soggetto Ventuno" discovered that Webdriver Torso belongs to a network of accounts called "ytuploadtestpartner_torso". Ventuno later found several other accounts with similar videos, many of which were withdrawn or made private after Ventuno's investigation was published. The network is connected to the Facebook page and the Twitter page, which has now been removed. The Facebook page has mentioned "Johannes Leitner", an employee of Google Za¼rich. Leitner befriends another employee, "Matei Gruber". "Matei" is mentioned on 00014 (see above). Ventuno then compared scenes from videos drawn with Google Zoned photos, and noticed matching things, indicating that the videos that were withdrawn were recorded on Google ZÃÆ'¼rich, and that channels and all similar channels were run from Google Zrichly.

Video destination

Videos are created to test the quality of YouTube videos. After creation, the video is uploaded to YouTube. The uploaded video is then compared to the video before it's uploaded, to see how much quality is lost.

YouTube replies

When YouTube was asked about the Webdriver Torso, they replied:

"We will never give you slow uploads or lose quality video, and we will not disappoint you by playing YouTube in poor video quality. That's why we always run tests like Webdriver Torso." This is a reference to Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up".
