Here we Come A-wassailing (or Here We Come A-caroling ) is a traditional English Christmas song and New Year's Song, it seems to consist of. 1850. Old English songs refer to 'wassailing', or singing door-to-door christmas carols that want good health, while a - is an age-old intense prefix; compare A-Hunting We Will Go and the lyrics for The Twelve Days of Christmas (for example, "Six geese a - laying").

By Digest Readers ; "Christmas spirit often makes the rich a little more generous than usual, and beggars and orphan bands dance their way through the snowy streets of England, offering to sing with joy and telling good fortune if the householder will give them a drink from a bowl of issail or a penny or pork pie or, let them stand for a few minutes beside the warmth of the fireplace. The bowl of the vessel itself is a warm combination of hot ale or beer, apples, spices and mead, just enough alcohol to warm your fingers, fingers and tingling fingers of the singers. Variant

The variant is known as "Here We Come A-Christmasing". It replaces the word "wassail" with "Christmas".

There are also other variants (often, but not always, sung by Americans) where, the first verse is sung, "Here We Come A-Caroling" and is so titled. Often in this version, the third verse (immediately after the first refrain (see the lyrics)) is deleted, along with the following refrain, but this depends on the version used.

Another variant is entitled, "We Have Been Temporary" or "Yorkshire Wassail Song."
