Cory Asbury tells the story behind the song while leading her in worship at the Heaven Come Conference 2017, an event organized by Bethel Music, quotes the Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15 as a reference to scripture references that say:
When I use the phrase, 'God's reckless love', when we say it, we do not say that God Himself is reckless, He is not crazy. However, we say that the way He loves, in many ways, likewise. But what I mean is this: He is not at all concerned with the consequences of his own actions concerning his own salvation, comfort, and well-being.... He does not wonder what He will gain or lose by placing himself in the line, He just puts Himself out there on the off-chance that you and I may look back to Him and give to Him love it is in return. His love left ninety-nine to find one at a time and for many practical adults who were a foolish concept. Well, what if He lost ninety-nine in finding that one, right? What if, finding that one lost sheep is and will always be very important?

"Reckless Love" is Cory Asbury's debut entry on the US Hot Christian Songs charts, originally appearing at No. 1. 16 as released by Billboards on November 18, 2017, while topping the Christian Song Songs Sales Ladder as well. Billboard reported that in the week ending February 1, 2018, the single broke through the top 10 of the Hot Christian Songs charts, peaking at No. 1. 7 due to a significant increase in streaming and radio broadcasting.
