Production
Starting with this series, Thomas & amp; Friends broadcast in the United States for the first time as an overall television program. It first appeared as a sequence of the American television show Shining Time Station from 1989 to 1995.
For the eighth series, Steve Asquith, after 20 years as a crew member, took over as director of David Mitton, who has directed the show since the first series, and Simon Spencer became a producer. In addition, Robert Hartshorne and Ed Welch and Peter Lurye took over as composers and songwriters after Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell went. Paul Larson and Abi Grant are script editors for this series.
This is the first series to introduce the opening and closing of new credits, plus a brief description of Sodor Island before each episode begins.
Also starting with this series, the episode duration was increased to seven minutes from the original four and a half minutes.
The series is produced using a digital video camera, which creates a slightly different look for the show. There is also a subtle shift towards the use of CGI elements, provided by HOT Animation subsidiary HiT Entertainment, although the filming remains at Shepperton Studios.
For US broadcasts, other changes include the addition of CGI sequences in the mini segment between episodes, transition effects, and the opening intro section of the book.
This series is also the first series to see the use of The Steam Team, characterized by eight characters including Thomas the Tank Engine, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, and Emily.
