Plot
Amelia, Milly, 14 years old, Michaelson (Deakins) and her family moved to a new suburban home after the death of her father. Milly befriends her new neighbors, Geneva, and Milly and her eight-year-old brother Louis (Savage) have difficulty adjusting to their new school, while their mother Charlene (Bedelia) seeks to reduce job titles and her inability to learn how to use computer. Louis was also harassed by a bully on the street who would not let him get around the block. During the first night at home, Charlene tells Milly that she will need her help to make this work. Milly returns to her bedroom and talks to her pet bird when something flies past the window, but when Milly goes to investigate, she sees nothing.
Milly and Geneva watch Eric Gibb (Underwood), an autistic boy who lives next door with his alcoholic uncle Hugo (Gwynne). Eric never said a word in his life, did not like to be around people and showed strange behavior related to flying. Milly hears that Eric's parents died in a plane crash. That night, Milly and her family watched Eric (along with Milly's teacher, Mrs. Sherman) and three adults appeared outside with Eric wearing a tight jacket and restrained by two men, with Mrs. Sherman argues with a woman about what works best for Eric. Milly then revealed to Geneva one night when Milly's mother came out for the evening that she found Eric interesting.
Although Eric can not communicate with anyone, he begins to react to Milly. Mrs Sherman observes this interaction and asks Milly to watch Eric, explaining that because of drinking Uncle Hugo, Eric is always the danger taken by the authorities and placed in the hospital. Milly worked with Eric during the school year and noted his progress, which was slow at first. Milly noted excitedly the first time Eric smiled to himself instead of just copying his own smile. Eric did not do anything when Milly threw the ball at him, except for one day when he spontaneously grabbed and caught a baseball that flew into Milly's head.
However, strange events, such as Eric's apparent ability to appear in his own window in an instant and in the next Milly without any connection between their homes, began to make Milly question reality. In his notes, Milly wonders if Eric becomes more like himself, or vice versa.
On a school field trip, without anyone but Eric, Milly fell off the bridge while trying to pick a rose. His knocking was knocked unconscious, he dreamed that he woke up in the hospital, with Eric sitting on the window sill. After a conversation with him (though without the words in Eric's part), he becomes convinced he can fly. Eric gives him the rose he is trying to reach and then, grabs his hand, leads her out of the window and the two begin to fly. Both watch the fireworks from the cloud before they share a kiss and return to the hospital window. After watching Eric fly, Milly's dream became a nightmare when he saw his father in hospital bed, dead, with a girl named Mona (whom Milly ordered to throw volleyball over his head before) throwing a volleyball at him that dropped him out. window.
Milly then wakes up in the hospital and tells her mother that Eric can fly and that she caught him when he fell. A psychiatrist, Dr. Grenader, talks to Milly and tells him that Eric caught him because he just had a concussion and no serious injuries. Dr. Grenader, however, proposes a more logical explanation and explains his belief that Eric may fly probably because of the stress caused by his father's death when he died of cancer.
Upon returning home, Milly sees a rose on the window sill and becomes convinced that Eric can fly. When he shouted to Uncle Hugo about Eric's whereabouts, he replied by saying that the institute had taken him away when Hugo was found drunk again. Regardless of the efforts of Milly and her family, they are not allowed to see Eric. As they leave, Eric tries to force the window open and is held back by two men trying to calm him down. Another attempt by Louis to get around the block failed because the intruders tore the three wheels apart and to make matters worse, Max's dog was hit by a passing car and taken to a veterinary hospital.
That night, Milly thinks he saw Eric on his roof during a storm and after climbing upstairs, he found Eric, who was shivering cold and still wearing a straitjacket after escaping from the institute. When Milly helped him, he took out a box and from it, he took out the ring he gave Milly.
When the authorities arrived at Eric's house the next day, Milly slipped out Eric and the police chased them to the school roof during the carnival. Eric switched to Milly and mentioned his name, the first word he'd said so far. Milly asks Eric if he can really fly, and he smiles and nods. He holds his hand and both fall off the building. Just before it hit the ground, Milly and Eric began flying in the simple view of the crowd around the carnival, following Milly and Eric down the streets of their city, to the surprise of Charlene, Louis, Geneva, and Uncle Hugo. Eric takes Milly to his own window, tells him that he loves her, and kisses her before he says goodbye and flies away.
Milly was sad, but quickly realized why Eric had to go: Over the next few weeks, spectators, police, and scientists moved the city, seeking explanations and picking up all Eric's stuff for analysis. Milly speculates that Eric will also be taken by scientists if he stays. It was revealed that Milly's father knew he had cancer, but kept it secret from his family because he did not want them to worry. Instead of seeking treatment, he said goodbye and committed suicide. His refusal to fight for his life made Michaelsons feel helpless and desperate, but Eric's ability to fly showed them that anything was possible if you believed.
Unlike Milly's father, Eric and Michaelson's remaining uncle refused to surrender: Uncle Eric overcame his drinking problem and got a very good job; Michaelson Max's dog gets better; Louis dominates the street bullies (with the help of Max); Charlene mastered the computer at work; and Milly regains his interest in life and his relationship with those around him. The movie ends with Milly looking out the window waiting for Eric. At sunset, he threw a paper plane flying up.
