"Spring Break Anthem" was first conceived during the 2010 session that produced the second album of the trio, Turtleneck & amp; Chain (2011) but not fully developed until they begin recording The Wack Album by the end of 2012. The initial goal is to pair the rough and irresponsible spring behavior with the same description- sex marriage. "We wanted to show how ridiculous the spring behavior was to be normal and gay marriage was crazy when it was completely the opposite," Schaffer said. Furthermore, Samberg states that, while viewing music videos, the song takes another level of satire, illustrating that a careless "macho" young man who normally hates same-sex marriage ideas, has no problem taking advantage of women in the spring. resting and "acting like an animal," is in stark contrast to the reality of same-sex marriage, described by Samberg as "people who only want to be civilized and have the right and concern for each other."
The trio performed the song live for YouTube Comedy Week, which required four shots, after which the group lost their votes.
