A screencast is a digital recording of the computer screen output, also known as video screenshot , often containing audio narration. The term screencast compares with the related term screenshot ; while screenshots produce a single image of a computer screen, the screencast is basically a film of change over time that users see on a computer screen, enhanced by audio narration.

The origin of the term
In 2004, columnist Jon Udell invited readers of his blog to propose names for emerging genres. Udell chose the term "screencast", proposed by Joseph McDonald and Deeje Cooley.
The terms "screencast" and "screencam" are often used interchangeably, due to the influence of the ScreenCam market as a screencasting product in the early 1990s. ScreenCam, however, is a federal trademark in the United States, whereas screencasts are not trademarked and have made use of in publications as part of the Internet and vernacular Computing.

Screencasts can help demonstrate and teach the use of software features. Creating a screencast helps software developers showcase their work. Educators can also use screencasts as another means to integrate technology into the curriculum. Students can record video and audio as they demonstrate the proper procedures for solving problems on an interactive whiteboard.
Screencasts are a useful tool for ordinary software users as well: They help report archiving where screencasts replace a potentially obscure written explanation; they help show others how a given task is accomplished in a particular software environment.
The seminar organizers may choose to regularly record a complete seminar and make it available to all participants for future reference and/or sell this recording to people who can not afford the cost of a live seminar or do not have the time to attend the seminar. This will generate additional revenue streams for the organizers and make knowledge available to a wider audience.
This seminar recording strategy has been widely used in areas where using a simple video camera or audio recorder is not enough to make a useful seminar recording. Computer-related seminars require recording of high-quality and readable screen content that is not usually accomplished by video cameras that record desktops.
In the classroom, teachers and students can use this tool to create videos to explain content, vocabulary, etc. Videos can make classroom time more productive for teachers and students. Screencasts can increase student engagement and achievement and also provide more time where students can work collaboratively in groups, so screencasts help them to think through cooperative learning.
In addition, screencasts allow students to move at their own pace as they can pause or review content anytime and anywhere. Screencast is excellent for students who only need oral and visual explanations of the content presented.
Most trial versions of screencasting programs often apply watermarks automatically, prompting users to purchase the full version to remove them.
Hardware
An alternative solution for screencast capture is the use of RGB hardware or DVI card grabber frame. This approach places the burden of the recording and compression process on machines separate from those that produce captured visual material.
